Why Can't We Get A CS-80 VST That Actually Sounds Like a CS-80?

With what we have, we can get very close.

The mastering, reverbs, mixing etc... are not exactly the same, but you can feel it's possible to get really deeply in the Blade Runner sound area.

No. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Go listen to The Legend and then go listen to a Minimoog.
And to the poster above. No. Wrong, wrong, wrong. No amount of programming is going to get these emulations to sound like an actual CS-80.

The relative flavor is there but that does NOT sound like a CS-80.Julien Unison wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 5:47 pm With what we have, we can get very close.

Thanks for playing.

Bottom line... The greater majority of players don't need one. The current ones will do.
And there's a very good chance that if you bought one just to fill your personal taste, it would somehow fall just as short.

Oh? Really? Let's see.
Bought Polymoog emulation (XILS PolyM). LOVE it! They hit that one out of the park. I cannot tell the difference.
Bought Minimoog emulation (The Legend) LOVE it! Also, a home run, unlike Arturia's which just sucks on all levels.
Bought Melotron emulation (GForce M-Tron Pro) LOVE it! Another amazing emulation.
So why would I be disappointed if somebody actually came out with a CS-80 emulation that ACTUALLY sounds like a CS-80?

Dasheesh, please, stop talking. I own Lush 101. It sounds NOTHING like a CS-80. Please. You're just sounding silly now.

First of all, for ANY emulation to even have a snowball's chance in hell of sounding like a CS-80, it would need to have a ribbon controller AND polyphonic aftertouch.

Oh, and of course the Synclavier V. What an amazing job Arturia did on that, which surprised and shocked the shit out of me. Of course they had a lot of help with that one.

Do you also dislike chocolate?...Sex?
Either way, it was not the CS80 that made that soundtrack special, it was the composer

Yes and no. Played on a regular grand piano, which would have sounded nice enough, it would have not been nearly the same.el-bo (formerly ebow) wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 6:20 pmDo you also dislike chocolate?...Sex?

When I was a kid I wanted one, just 'cause it was huge and had tons of knobs and buttons (wtf did I know). I have the Arturia and play around with it sometimes just so I can pretend (I'm tempted to purchase a Korg Odyssey to fulfill that wacky nostalgia; please don't judge )
I can't tell from jack whether a CS-80 emulation is accurate (I don't trust just listening to artists using it because there are other effects, etc.), but I'm people familiar with it are more tuned in. I'd purchase an decent emulation just to "pretend" (and maybe lift my couch so my back muscles could pretend along with me!)

Ah - a CS-60 *does* have aftertouch. What it doesn't have is the two layers. I've owned a 60 for thirty five years or thereabouts; it's living at someone else's place at the moment, as I don't have room for it.wagtunes wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 4:48 pmI actually owned the model without aftertouch (CS-60) and even THAT sounds better than the emulations.AudioAlien wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 4:37 pmWhy, none sound as good as the one in your studio?
(have you ever played one?)
That aside, nothing comes close to Vangelis' recordings. The emulations are laughable.
Is the Arturia a 1 for 1 emulaion of a CS-80? No. Can it get close enough 95% of the time? Yes.

Yeah, that's right. Well, it's been 30 years. But I still remember the sound. It had a very distinct sound, especially the filters. The Arturia is laughable. But then all their early filters were laughable.ew wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 6:30 pmAh - a CS-60 *does* have aftertouch. What it doesn't have is the two layers. Anyway, nobody seems to want to answer my question why we can't have a good emulation except for one person who essentially said nobody cares and is happy with what's available.
Maybe that's the truth. Maybe nobody really cares and maybe there's no market for a truly amazing CS-80 emulation.
Maybe that's the answer to my question and I can just go lock this thread because I don't need to hear people that we have synths that either sound better or can come close.

I didn't say you'd be disappointed with the emulation, but that there's a good chance you'd be just as disappointed with a real CS now. Because what you fail to realize is that you're dealing with a memory more than the instrument itself. Those others you say 'nailed' the emulation? Well, not everyone agrees with that either. Because what everyone remembers is not necessarily the actuality.wagtunes wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 6:07 pmOh? Really? Let's see.
