Back in 1983 when I was in high school my friend paul and I started a band, Söftware. We we mainly goofing off but having fun trying to make music like we enjoyed: a mix of prog, jazz, folk, classical... we have broad tastes. we were using whatever gear we could find. even noisy radio shack stuff. we always recorded to cassette.

This is part 1 of a 10 part piece called Whale that we recorded over a period of about 15 years. To be clear, we would get together, jam on this theme, record direct to cassette, each side being the next two parts. each part being the length of a 90 min cassette side. essentially getting together every few years to expand on Whale.

Its very primitive stuff. but totally live off the floor no stopping.

I will be adding later parts as I work on them. Just trying to clean them up a bit. Anyway this is what I was doing 36 years ago... :phones:

Edgar Froese, the founder of Tangering Dream, has been a huge influence on my music since the mid-70s when I first heard TD. When he died in 2015 I immediately set out to write a track in memory. That track, recently re-mastered, is now part of this large ~ 5 hour release of other tributes to Edgar.

Here is the track on my soundcloud:

I am remixing this behmoth. I couldn't get the previous version to a high enough fidelitiy to my liking. I realized it would need a remix. Looking for your feedback either post here or on the track if you have the interest and time. :phones:

UPDATE: remixing project is over. here's the result...

I haven't listened through all of it. Great stuff. I too kept a large back catalog of my early stuff. It is always fun to listen back, and even more guts to post it, but I like what I hear so far, ha.

Thanks! This is my most popular soundcloud track so I feel it deserved some updating. I've made some tweeks to it, mainly felt it was too bassy. I also need to master it when the mix is done.

When it comes to tracks, I approach them like other software - that is, I have no problems going back and updating them. Since nothing is released on archival media, and its all online, I figure this is a good approach - keep going back and updating tracks. :phones:

Here's what I was doing 30 years ago. That's real tape saturation on the bottom end. Not what I intended, so there it is. This is writted with Notator SL on an Atari. It's driving midi out to all outboard synths. I had many analogue and digital synths back then. I lacked top quality recording gear. However this is mixed in real time as Notator played into probably an Alesis mixer and outboard effects. Boss too. Some other stuff. I even had tape echos back then. Then onto Ampex 465 1/4" 2-track @ 15ips, might have been with outboard dBx II on a TEAC 3440. Mastered just now ITB. :phones:
