it just sounds like some serum to me tbh, i'd go heavy on distortion, post distortion filter and OTT, after the initial FM and filtering.

Although I have a lot of respect for SeamlessR and I think he's obviously incredibly talented, I just can't listen to his videos. He tends to incoherent rambling, and I wish he would blow his nose sometime for crying out loud, he always sounds so congested.
Yep... i absolutely feel the same.

It is doable. I’ve been hired to make “exact sounds” for people before. Mostly for cover bands. That is why I asked. It is an interesting challenge, but the last 5% or so that really makes the sound “the sound” is a whole thing by itself. It doesn’t seem worth it unless you really want to use the exact sound in a cover or remix type situation. It is fun trying to figure out how sounds were made, however, I wouldn’t worry too much about getting it exactly the same unless there is a definite need. Most of the differences in “families of similar sounds” are nearly interchangeable. You can get it and probably with something as simple as synth 1 and free fx if you want to spend the time. It is definitely possible.

Haha, so true. Well there are plenty of videos about these growly "Skrillex" type FM based basses. Like this one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1zijI2LMAI

Your example probably has 1 layer that sounds like a lowpassed square or triangle (odd partials) where the root (first partial) is very prominent. In FM you get odd partials when carrier/modulator ratio is e.g. 1:2. And a second layer that does the growly high frequency content. So you'd probably need an algorithm with 2 carriers (outputs to AMP).

Not sure a 4 or 6 sine-only operator FM synth can do this (like DEXED). Maybe it needs non-sines as operators (like on OxeFM). Or you could try the masterfull multitool SURGE (which has a super versatile oscillator section and FM options).

These are all excellent free synths. Of course there are other synths that offer FM...

I have not actually tried to (re)create this sound yet....

huh?

I mean I like it but it's completely different than the sound in the original clip.

Try a notch at the large peak in the mids. That will make it more crispy like the example.

Never really tried or used these types of basses. But got curious and had a look into how they are made. We allready established that FM is the basis. But only-sine FM (like DX7/DEXED) won't do. You do need other (richer) spectra as operators.

The video below is a short and helpfull one I guess. It's using "the ultimate FM synth"....FM8. I don't have FM8, but will see if SURGE (and/or even OxeFM) can do this. Maybe with some post processing (saturation/distortion).

Haha I guess... it sounds a little closer when the lfo runs at 1/16

For me it sounds like a processed didjeridoo...
