Records with Amazing Stereo Imagery and Spatial Wonder

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

Dear KVR, My people!

Can you suggest , using links,
youtube , etc

Records with AMAZING STEREO IMAGERY .

Records with GREAT SPATIAL QUALITIES.

Then Discuss some of the techniques
in them.

Qualities that can be heard even on
rubbish, standard stereo systems or headphones
that will blow our minds.

THE WHOLE RECORD, I know that bit at the beginning
of "Dancining On the Ceiling" by Lionel Richie
where the footsteps seem to come from behind
you on headphones is great. But it's not the whole record.

Er thanks for the advert...

What I meant was something like this below. This is
a good example. The Stereo elements are slowly
bought in , till the drums kick in much later.
its rich...gorgeous..

AIR - "THE VAGABOND"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1R5ELgJPGw

And this very different record. If you like playing
ping pong in nature...

YOSHI HORIKAWA- "Bubbles" [First Word Records]

Whatever your picks they don't even have to be beautiful,
or any particular genre ,they just have to do something
amazing with Space ,Spatial placement and the Stereo Field.

Definitely anything but beautiful, but the stereo placement is absolutely wild throughout Trout Mask Replica

e.g.

The amount of stuff going on around and behind you ....

Captain Beefheart was different!

Didnt know what i'd get looking
at that youtube thumbnail.

I take that and give you this...

Trilok Gurtu - "Once I Wished a Tree Upside Down"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lx5r3j6FyF0

I was expecting more electronic music
really
in this thread, cause we got all
the software and gadgets to go to town
now. But theres a tonne of good
analogue/hybrid stuff out there
from back in the day.

Anything that used the Zucarelli Holophonic system, binaural, sounds amazing on cans. I have their test record, and they also used it on one of the early Psychic TV albums.

Anything that used the BASE system, Orbital's original mix of Halcyon has it INCREDIBLE during the end section.

Anything that used QSound.

Etc etc.

Not any kind of special effect trick but I love how this track starts out super mono and then the vocals come in with really wide reverb - it's a great contrast. Classic mix trick I know but so effective. Try headphones:

There's so many well mixed albums but they really started to go up a level when the CD was invented imo. Hysteria had a huge sound which for it's time was quite revolutionary, specially for that genre. Every track wide as f#ck.

@resistant ...

You mean this...

Roy Bud - "Get Carter" Main Theme From The Motion Picture.

Yes, a bit like the air track above , it brings in the
separate elements in their own spatial pockets before
hearing them altogether. Lalo Schifrin does this
for Bullit too...

I love Yoshi's music, but yeah, whoever he has do his mastering really slams it beyond good taste, IMO.

An Electric Storm by White Noise. Considering the primitive equipment used, it’s pretty incredible.

The 90's CD re-issue had the B.A.S.E. system slathered all over it. Sounds great though. :)
