i havent used SE since they changed the demo to "demo gui" and also changed some internal stuff.
i did however really enjoy building stuff for fun.
Now it exports 64bit, im wondering how many 3rd party modules have been updated as i used quite a few. Would be nice to get back into it (full version) hopefully it hasnt changed too much

looks like a few here, but not many...

lost the details/login of the SE Yahoo group, so no idea if there are many more 64bit modules there.

Also look out for developers who provide Mac versions of their modules. These allow you to make Mac Audio Unit plugins.

Porting an old project to 64bit might be a pain, as a lot of old modules(32bit) don't have equivalents, but building from scratch will be easy as pie. That being said, the new SE has a bunch of new native modules too, and supports oversampling if your into building things that distort
If I can put a figure to it, I'd gather to say there is about between 250 and 300 new 64bit(WIN) modules, Rob (RH) and Lee's (RoyTech) modules have MAC versions, mine (TD) will probably follow suit by the end of the year.

I’d love it if all the developers of old free SynthEdit VSTs would port their stuff to 64-bit AudioUnit...
I know, fat chance. Many of the developers vanished.

Atm only my DSP modules are also MAC compiled, GUI mods not done yet.
Am almost halfway, and some need a rewrite from GDI to Direct2D.
After that I'll try to remake Daz his modules, got his complete sourcecode.
Old SE mods: no chance they will be ported, but several can be rebuilt. Others are bound to 32bit, sadly.

Can't remember that it has ever been on sale. The cool thing though is that there never seems to be any upgrade fees either, my once off purchase has lasted nearly a decade, that's a bargain in my book.

TBH, i'd go for Reaktor. I only briefly tried SynthEdit, but, it seemed more complicated than Reaktor, and i didn't like the GUI nearly as much as Reaktor's either. Also, i'd think it's be tough to beat Reaktor's library, the included one, or third party. There's some really quality sounding stuff in there. Of course, you won't be able to build your own VST's, just something inside Reaktor. If that's an issue for you, then Reaktor of course won't be a alternative.

chk071 does have some good points, it kinda depends on what you want to do. I only tested Reaktor a couple years back but it did seem simpler(easier) and had better documentation, and a lot of pre-built examples. I'd just demo Reaktor and check out the user library for stuff that might be potentially similiar to what you wanna do, if it inspires you - go with that. No matter what you choose, there will still be a learning curve so it's best to choose whatever suits you personally best.
