vRoom: Acoustic Steel String Guitar Preset

Hello,

As I am a neophyte in the world of reverbs and such, and one would prefer to have a "stock" preset available rather than attempt to "create" my own, I am hoping that someone here can provide me with some assistance.

As you know, vRoom contains a considerable number of stock presets - 191 to be precise, and of which to me at least, only adds to the confusion of locating that right reverb preset for my particular usage.

So my question then is, is there an existing vRoom preset that someone would recommend for use with an acoustic steel strung guitar. I perform mostly solo/Celtic finger-style guitar music.

The reverb sound that Pierre Bensusan is using here is particularly appealing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApqAcE5zL94
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and remuneration for services rendered is available as well. Thank you!

PS: I also own vVintageVerb as well.

Love Pierre Bensusan, got his online TrueFire DADGAD course that I'll hopefully start next year! That Loweden still has the quacky piezo sound when plugged in though, I bet it'd sound much nicer miced up.

When he shows you the laptop near the end, you can see that he's using the Lexicon 224 reverb plugin:

You might want to try Valhalla Vintage Verb to get closer to this sound, as some of the algorithms are very similar to the 224.

Having said that, it sounds like a pretty basic Hall algorithm to me, quite rolled off/warm sounding reverb, with medium long tail. Just have a play with VRoom, maybe send a recording of your fingerpicking through it while flipping presets and tweaking, it shouldn't take too long to get a grip on what's happening, and then you'll have a reverb tailored exactly to your playing.

Hello,

Thank you for the reply...very much appreciated.

I saw and met with Pierre when he performed in Seattle, Washington as few weeks back.

He is presently testing out a twin mic system, the MiniFlex 2Mic - http://miniflexmic.com/products/model_7.htm...in particular the Model 7, which is the one I use. He has two holes available, and will using the top one for the MiniFlex and the bottom one for the Barberra. He had this mic installed in Berekeley by the developer of the 2Mic, Ken Donnell. Just waiting to hear about the end result. The use of the 2Mic along with the Barberra will get rid of that "quacky piezo sound" so common with this type of system.

He is certainly a great and very passionate performer. It is interesting to note that no one at the concert really cared about this quacky-ness - simply because he is such a great performer.

PS: We can talk DADGAD via PM if you are interested.

Yeah, most listeners don't seem to be too bothered by the piezo quack, but I know a lot of players and engineers who are! ;) And as you say, a great performance always trumps poor sound.

I've been experimenting a lot with micing my acoustic this last year, I usually use two mics, a tube LDC at the classic 14th fret position, and an SDC pointed towards the bridge, both about 50 cm away. I usually pick the best sounding for the application, and use that, but sometimes I used both, hard panned, and processed differently.

Only started having a play with DADGAD recently, but love the sound of it, and a l,ot of Folk players I love use it a lot. Once I finish my current guitar course I shall move on to more fingerstyle and DADGAD study.

Good call! The algorithms in VintageVerb that get closest to the 224:

- Dirty Hall
- Dirty Plate
- Chaotic Hall

I would try one of those two halls listed above. Alternatively, you could try the Smooth Plate or Chaotic Chamber algorithms from VintageVerb. These would help with the smooth reverb sound heard in the video.

My only experience with DADGAD is playing "Kashmir." For fingerstyle, I tend to lean towards open D versus the sus4 tuning of DADGAD. I also like the "double dropped" D tuning that Neil Young uses a lot (DADGBD).

Sean,

Thank you for the suggestions...very much appreciated.

I will give these a try and get back to you.

PS: Hermetech Mastering, I am the Canadian distributor of the MiniFlex 2Mic. Anyone who is serious about acoustic instrument amplification should have a serious look at these.

Sean,

I see that the recommended algorithms are actually the "Modes" within VintageVerb. Remember, I am a neophyte when it comes to reverbs.

Therefore, are there any particular presets within VintageVerb that you would recommend.

It there a setting that could be used just to test the various Modes?

Thank you.

Looks good, but am quite happy with my tube LDC!
