I always find it helpful to understand as much about the underlying tech as possible so I can do informed decisions.
Yeah, I think I once had a talk with Claes about the influence of routing on processing order, but I no longer am clear on the outcome.
Maybe you can ask support about this.

First of all i wish there would be a latancy-switch button in a prominent area. I´m using a short latancy only for record - in edit i use the 2048 samples. But allways this wide way via options/preferences/audio... that could be much smarter.

A big cpu-killer are some grafik-fx, like "continuesly scroll" - set this to "singel page" via options/preferences/genearl.
Some vsti, like izotope trash needs also much cpu only for showing there grafik-klimbim. If you close that windows the cpu gets a lot more breath.
