recording VST instruments

I've used the recording function on Cantabile Performer to record a 20 second segment of a VST, using GSI VB3 and my Kurzweil PC3 as midi controller. The result is two files, one midi and one .wav. I thought that I would be able to load the .wav in my DAW as a new track. However, the .wav file doesn't produce any sound. Perhaps I'm not understanding some basics of midi. Can someone help me figure this out?
