I think you might get this idea because you're used to modular plugin hosts.

A simple plugin with several inputs and outputs. All channels are muted by default, each channel or pair of channels gets an ADSR and a specified midi note which unmutes that channel when triggered.

So you could set up a homebrew "Artillery" or "The Finger" style FX or do other interesting and unqiue forms of live sampling.
