Cubase SE - Can't Record Midi

I've asked this before but got no answer so maybe this is a problem unique to me.

I can play midi in Cubase SE, but if I click record, the transport starts moving as usual but there's no audio output and no midi is recorded.

I also have Cubasis 5 installed (which is what I have to use given the problem above).

I have an evolution midi keyboard connected via USB which works just fine in Cubasis and as above in SE.

I've tried everything I can think of within the settings of SE but nothing works. I've even tried a re-install.

I really want to use SE, any ideas?
