Hmm, he claims he'd never listened to the Nirvana song before, which has been deemed plausible given his age (but it can obviously be hard to remember what songs you've heard). IDK if the melody is really original enough to validly claim copyright.

the bass trombone in The Grand Wazoo - 0:58 on the original LP - is the same as what you hear at the beginning of the series Danger Man (1961). Different key, same bass trombone long note + long/short motif as develops in the Zappa. pretty hilarious
