Hi guys. I was watching a synthmaster video on YouTube and noticed that the presenter (I think the developer) was having issues differentiating between frequency and phase modulation. Is anyone able to explain it if layman's terms? However, to be honest I was a bit surprised they were unable to explain the difference even though it's a design they implemented. That kind of put me off a bit.

Frequency modulation and phase modulation are related but they are not the same thing:

For DX7 type "FM" synthesis phase modulation should be used.

For a detailed explanation, look for a video by SeamlessR about Sytrus. It explains why sometimes frequency modulation is actually Phase modulation.
