Quick recap... Squids Tron and SampleTron overlap, but the overlap isn't 100%. Each has some sounds that aren't in the other. The "Exclusive Extras" titles fill in the gaps - covering the stuff from one library that isn't included in the other library.

A little more on the Squids Tron Collection, from my original documentation (I paid full price for it when it first came out, so it's mind-boggling for me to see it available so cheap now!)...

The instruments that were sampled include:

- Joni Mitchell's Mark V Mellotron. The Mark V was a dual manual version of the M400. (The tape frames were the same, so the sounds really aren't any different. Squids simply had access to Joni's machine, so he sampled it.) Only about 10 of the Mark V's were made and sold. Paul McCartney and Rick Wakeman own two of the others.

- the Mellotron M400 that was used by U2 for The Unforgettable Fire. It was also used on sessions with Aimee Mann and Jon Brion for "Whatever". Squids later sold it to Tom Petty.

- the M400 that was used by The Black Crowes on the "Amorica" album.

- another M400 that was previously owned by Bobby Sherman.

- the Chamberlin Music Master 500 now belonging to Tom Waits. (The Chamberlin was the original incarnation of the Mellotron.)

- the Optigan and the Chamberlin Music Master 400 belonging to Neil Finn. These were used on the Crowded House "Together Alone" album and the "Woodface" tour.

- a Chamberlin M-4 that the Moody Blues used for touring.

There are many others, but these are the top ones in the name-dropping category.

The list hints at part of the appeal for the Mellotron sounds. They are definitely lo-fi all the way. But they're classics, and they've been used on countless classic albums and songs. The sounds really aren't all that great, but there's a historical aspect to it.

Since the Mellotron made noise by playing tapes rather than using oscillators to generate a tone, sampling the tape frames is a vital part of preserving the sounds made by these instruments. Many of the original tapes are now over 40 years old and deteriorating.

Thanks for the info!. I've been comparing all my different Mellotron samples and each of them has it's own character. I think Squids is one of the few that have captured the magic of the instrument.

I will definitively got it, along with the Ocean Way Drums download.

(note: *.stw = parent samples. *.stip = child patches, which are based on the parent samples but with different effects settings.)

(EDIT: ignore the *.sti and *.sth files. They go hand in hand with the *.stw to create the parent patches. So there aren't anywhere near as many "sounds" as there are files, but there are still a whole lot of them.)

Looks like it posted okay. As you can see simply from the directory, Squids Tron Collection is a pretty big - and fairly comprehensive - collection.

I have to run for a few hours. I'll post the SampleTron directory contents later tonight.

Okay, another big post... let's see if this one goes through...

I don't have the "Exclusive Extras". I have the full versions of both SampleTron and Squids Tron Collection instead.

But since SampleTron Exclusive Extras is the stuff in SampleTron that was *NOT* included in Squids Tron Collection, then the trick is to get both directories into a spreadsheet and make a list of the names in SampleTron that don't match the names in Squids Tron. So that's what I did, and here's the list.

I can't absolutely guarantee it for accuracy, but this *should* be the patch list for SampleTron Exclusive Extras:

Man oh man I can't decide. I've avoided IK stuff for so long. But I love the sound of trons and chamberlins.

I have M-Tron. It's nice but it doesn't inspire me sonically. The tron samples in my old Vintage Keys module sound more interesting to me. I have Eve2. The Tim Conrardy patches are gorgeous but it's a different vibe.
The demos for Squid's Trons have always sounded great to me.

Do I need more tron sounds?
Do I need the trouble of C/R and the bugs of IK?

"It's a different vibe" sums up the varying sample collections of Mellotron quite well.

The same titles of tape frames played on the same model of machine can have a different feel, even without considering the different equipment and techniques used to record the samples and the differences in the sample playback programs.

I think you'll find the ST 2.5 engine has taken out a lot of the bugs (both real and perceived) of its predecessors. Since you still have a few days, you might want to download the new SampleTank Free and give it a test drive.

ST is hands down my favorite tool for 'Trons. I can only speak for myself on this one, but the SampleTank engine has always seemed to me like it was just MADE to play Mellotron sounds. It has a "warmth" to it that's perfect for the Chamberlin / Mellotron strings, brass and guitar. And the main things that people knock about the SampleTank engine (age, using memory rather than disk streaming, lack of ultra high resolution samples) simply don't apply when you're dealing with the 'tron family of sounds.
