is 8GB enough not to get audio crackling?

i have installed UVI workstation which is free and there is a few Falcon demo patches within it, but my audio crackles pretty badly on both my soundcards i have, even at the highest buffer (albeit much less severe)

is this because i only have 8GB RAM?

i have win 10, 8GB, i7 4790k, SSD, 44100 sample rate

should this be crackling with 8GB, even at maximum buffer?

i want to get some decent software but at the moment i feel there is an issue. is it simply the 8GB of RAM?

the specs say "4GB RAM (8 GB+ highly recommended for large UVI Soundbanks)"

i feel it should be crackling with 8GB on this demo at all on highest buffer, and probably lower buffers too.

any thoughts?

I'm no expert but 8GB appears to be the absolute MININMUM for a lot of plugins these days. I brought a couple of Waves synths and they are completely unusable on my modest system.

I do not know, but 8GB is pretty low for today standards...
Anyway, use the Task Manager to monitor your memory consume
and you know if need more...

Better than the Task Manager:

The cause of crackling is the CPU cannot deliver the whole full buffer in time.

Watch the task manager indeed. You will see whether one CPU core is maxing out or whether memory gets filled up, possibly hitting the swapfile (disk IO) instead.

Have you done anything at all to optimise performance of this machine?

you've given us no info on your soundcard, or what DAW you're running, so no.
my other modular synth is a bugbrand

i use my roland system-8 as the soundcard, or behringer UMC 204HD. the problem seems consistent on both.

on task manager memory is sitting at 54% - 57% and CPU 13% - 15%, shooting up to 22% sometimes. memory is DDR3 if that matters.

Post

when i press stop (on ableton 10 sequencer) the memory doesn't change, but CPU goes down to 6%

i don't seem to see any individual cores...

i see wifi on the line graph is spiking up and down to max from zero. could that cause gremlins? ... disconnected from broadband but still crackling badly.

This means resources are not a problem.

Do you use dedicated audio drivers? ASIO or the like.

driver type is ASIO for both system-8 and behringer.

i would say its a cpu problem, not ram

why? CPU is 15% max when audio running.

looks like power settings. i set it from balanced to high performance and problem disappears.

thanks pictus for the link :D

nice i can plan ahead for the software i want now

seems like 8GB was enough indeed that was my hunch, but will be boosting to 16GB at least anyhow, 1 stick died and had to be removed so i will replace that at least.

22% total CPU usage can be just one core hitting 88%, which might be the reason.
You need to look at the tab where there are meters for individual cores.
eg https://www.nextofwindows.com/windows-1 ... sk-manager

[edit] changing the power plan would be my suggestion also, that's why I asked whether you had done any optimizations

yeah sorry i am ignorant on setting a pc up good for DAW use... looks like all 8 CPU cores are carrying a roughly equal burden on the green line graph, so that is good :tu:

does anyone know what exactly within the balanced settings causing the crackles?

do you all sit on high performance mode permanently?
