Seeing how some people can press a foot switch, play a few bars, and press it again to create a playing loop, I'm wondering what tools both hardware and software are good for this sort of thing for live performances?
I use Studio One for my DAW if that matters.
... Yes I'm not in the whole loops scene so I have no clue. I mostly do classical and soundtrack style. But I think having a tool like this would be quite useful at times even so.

Hardware tools : there are shedloads of looping pedals out there. basic principal as a delay plugin, so you sometimes see it as an option on the more flexible of them. Boss and EHX make a few things that will loop, I have one of the older EHX 4-track loopers.
Once upon a time there were some specialist rackmounted loopers, not sure if there are any in production now.
Some sampler devices can also do triggered sample-and-loop eg the Korg Kaoss Pads.
Software : A few DAWs have looper type plugins built in (Live, DP).
Also, there are a couple of specialist plugins out there based on the kind of thing the hardware racks could offer. Mobius is free. there's also Augustus Loop.
