twitewhite wrote:Synth1 isn't that great, even compared to other free synths. It's not bad by any means, but let's be honest. It's only is popular because it's free, there are many tutorials on it, and many soundbanks for it (and free and small file size, of course).
I have to disagree with you 100%. Synth1 (IMO) is an excellent plug, free or not. :D
Take a test drive with the Synth1 Librarian from Neutrino Sky, and you will recognize the amazing breadth of sounds possible with this synth. Using the librarian, you can browse your entire collection of Synth1 soundbank zip files for sounds that match your search criteria based on tags. You might just discover something you have overlooked! It's free too! :tu:

Another thread reminded me of another synth that never gets any love, and that's the very free Zebralette. Yes, only one oscillator, but it's a GREAT oscillator, you can detune, etc, really nice plugin especially if you don't want to fall down some rabbit hole and waste hours chasing after something simple to use as a filler.

Zebralette is really very cool! It is actually one of Zebra2's oscillators. :tu:

Sound that can be directly loaded into Zebra2 later. And should you eventually decide to upgrade to Zebra2, you will already know everything there is to know about the oscillators – which is quite an advantage.

SO...

Surge ( awesome, use it on everything)...
Phonec ( i haven't found anyone who has mentioned let alone used V2)...
Also there is a dirge of material on Spire...
noone mention Aparillo ( another left-field sugabytes synth)
the Mangle ( awesome granulaer synth)..
i would say synth1 also, but i think that's more of a best kept secret than 'undiscussed'.
FAW Circle
TAL modular
Synplant ( Ahhh, beautiful synplant)..
you know what, there are actually too many...

Phonec and TAL Modular are awesome. Got the CM version of Phonec recently, got a really unique sound to it.

I'm a humble beginner in the field of VST and you probably already know all the VST I've tested but, just in case, here's a list of my favourit VST Synths so far :

Republica
Alice 1377
Gigmate
Noisemo
WooSynth
Woo Vocal Theremin (I don't know if this one is really a synth but it's funny).

I also love Synth1 by the way.

Okay, so basically every synth ever made then, right?

Even in the most undiscussed synth thread there had been after 6 pages no mention of Halion, which is much more a synth than a sampler. Even on Steinberg forums its not very present.
Probably too powerful, complex and scary. The most likely reason is, that Steinberg is not capable of writing an non technocrat version of a manual, and none of the specialists either...
But hey, it is worth to look at. I am happy to not have missed their recent sale which probably was the only one since a decade...

While NI have some of the most popular vst synths, there's a bunch of synths coming from them that don't seem to be mentionned often. I'm thinking of Spark, Prism, Kontour, Rounds, stuff like that. I had them all with Komplete and never really use them cause I don't see why I would use one of these and not any other synth. I guess the particular workflow of some of those doesn't really help either.
