A marvellous monster indeed.

I think Sytrus popularity is being hurt by things that are not related to the quality of the synth: it's not available for Mac as standalone, no major updates since its release, except for the new skin, and Image line doesn't promote it with a specific strategy. Image-Line flagship product is FLStudio, all other products receive much less attention from their marketing department.

Another one I don't understand why it's not popular is Sonic Academy ANA 2. I own it and it's a great product for many reasons: spectacular sound, catchy default presets, great preset browser, can load Serum wavetables, the arpeggiator + chord memory make a killer combo, macro knobs, great modulation matrix to check what's going on with your sound, onboard EQ, decent FX, thoughtful interface, very easy to understand, ability to combine samples and oscillators, lots of visual feedback, modulations are dead simple to set...

But look for reviews. So many about ANA 1, so little about ANA 2. Sonic Academy Marketing and PR clearly has other priorities.

And absolute silence from Sonic Academy about updates, work in progress, etc. I bought it six months ago and I can't tell if the product is dead or alive.

Clearly, Sonic Academy does not believe in its own product. And I don't get why. It's not perfect, but there are so many things so good about this synth, so many things other synths should take... just nailing a few details with minor updates would keep this synth in the loop.

Biotek 2

Biotek 2 from Tracktion is very unique sounding instrument. It's a sampler and a synth with the tools to really develope the sound. I have bearly touched the surface on this beast. It launched as a blend between organic sounds (Think birds singing or a waterfall) and digital sounds. Biotek 1 was very simple and didn't really have the sound design tools available at release, and it hurt it sales. It has something like Yamaha's MODX's wonder knob on the front page that blends those sounds in a X-Y front page. The Biotek 2 is pretty much is a sound design machine where you can get very unique sounds. I was able to make some incredible developing pad sounds that I have never been able to make before.

Bitwig is my DAWs and UHe and Tracktion Synths are my Bae. I maybe buy one synth a year. REMEMBER SELF just one synth a year!

Great for bass and other things.

Saw it for $10 in the deals forum new...
It's an old synth but still sounds pretty good IMO, and the simple interface makes it easy to dial in most bread and butter VA type sounds. I'm glad they updated it to 64-bit.

The only trouble is finding it, since it's either out of stock (how that happens with a downloadable product, I do not know) or costs something ridiculous like €199 (which might have been justified in 2004 but certainly not in 2018). Plugin Boutique have a deal going on right now, though.

One of the few synths that really impressed me lately is ArcSyn. It sounds great and I love the unique and very, very flexible modulation system. Every single element of the synth is designed o be somewhat unique, which is super rare these days.

Definitely a great synth :tu:

+1

A real gem, from my somewhat limited experience with it
A well-behaved signature.

Just wonder how long it will take until any synth, discussed or undiscussed appears in this thread...
Did I mention the Telharmonium yet?

twitewhite wrote:Synth1 isn't that great, even compared to other free synths. It's not bad by any means, but let's be honest. It's only is popular because it's free, there are many tutorials on it, and many soundbanks for it (and free and small file size, of course).
What makes Synth1 truly great is its download size, not the fact that it is free. (872 KB,less than a megabyte)

Megabyte for megabyte it blows all other synths out of the water.

Its a real synth. No huge download - no samples - sparse FX - huge array of sound types possible.

Not a one trick pony.

Not my criterion no.1, TBH. Sound wise, it's OK, nothing more, nothing less. Quite thin, and quite dated filters, when you compare them to what's possible on nowadays payware soft synths.

Download size is the absolute least important factor when I'm looking for a plugin... :?

Glad you called what you are looking for a "plugin" and not a true synth.

Synth1 is a true synth.
