I just had some time to try Dorico SE tonight and think it's an incredibly well designed application. The free version imho is still very generous and would be enough if you were writing solo piano music or say, piano / voice or piano / violin.

MuseScore is also wonderful and clearly more fully featured, but Dorico feels more refined to me.

Doesn't surprise me. That's basically the difference between most, if not all open source apps, and commercial apps catered to professional use for me. Most often, they're light years ahead in terms of usability, and ease of use.
