For an upcoming concert where we want to add a visual component to the show which reacts to the live-audio, so today I started learning Magic (Music Visuals), a software which can visualize incoming audio using either inbuilt generators or imported images, videos or even live video input. After a few hours of patching together modules and learning what each module can do, here is a first result using one of my drone-scapes as audio input and two static fractal images I created with Fractal Architect 5, the animation is controlled via either frequency, pitch, tone or frequency range.

I just threw in so many modules and it got a bit dramatic indeed, but to have all these options for processing live audio in real time is pretty amazing.

A second experimental video made with a custom patch in Magic combining two internal generators and an external video I made with Fractal Architect 5, the incoming audio - a track from my album Orbitting - is modulating numerous Magic parameters in real time. Of course the compressed Youtube unquality creates quite a few artifacts.

We were just talking about that the other day, whhat happened to the 'music visualizers' rage? Seems everyone used to have the ole winamp-type-player thing for years if it wasn't your screensaver, then *poof* gone.
Not that I mind. They have their place like your example or a light show, but were annoying seeing them everywhere all the time. Maybe I just answered my own question...

Have you tried Vital?

Thanks, these examples are just the early stages of learning a new software, eventually things will get calmer, smoother, I just need to understand all the available modules and how they react best to incoming audio.

Here is another experiment, using my track Queens Throne as audio input, I made the images/videos used for the visual input with Fractal Architect/ArtMatic.

Lately I’m really getting into Ebo Suite for Ableton Live, which turns it into a highly flexible live VJ tool. Pair that with Signal, also from Isotonik Studios, and you have a really powerful, modular, node based system for visuals and sound.
I’ll also add that in general I find reactive visualizers rather boring on their own. Having some reactive aspect to the visuals is fine, but I feel it’s better to make a visual statement which can stand on its own, rather than the entire visual message being “I’m responding to the audio”.

Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.
