Well, I can apparently do no good in this thread. Not sure what’s up with the link to the survey. When I click on it it takes me to the survey page. I’ll remove it to avoid any more confusion.

I think it's alright Nathan,
thanks for kicking a thread off.
The 3 major players are Adobe Audition, Steinberg Wavelab and SF
The 2 free ones are Audacity and Waveosaur
prolly I'll run Wavelab one day,
but SF has the ACID looping tools which are essential for any loop-cutter
These looping tools are damn cool if u r try to chop beat-matched loops
It appears a new version is not about to come out,
but apart from everything suddenly becoming read-only,
Magix has integrated the codebase
When I began computer music, it sorta divides into an audio editor and a sequencer/host/daw-
so imo a very valid topic

wait, so Sound Forge Pro is on Mac?! I couldn't find any details about a MacOS version and the Sound Forge Pro 12 page just lists Windows specs.
I recently got a MacBook Pro and am switchin to Mac stuff for most of my audio stuff.
When I went into my Magix account it only shows a SF11 Pro Windows download.
I need a decent audio editor for the basics of sample conversion, batch MP3 stuff, Editing Records into my MP3 collection etc. WaveLab seems too much for me and I am trying to go dongle-less on the MacBook.
Should I stay away from SF 12 Pro? why? What is a good alternative? (Free ones left me cold and I didn't like using).

Yes stay well away from SF12...
SF12 is windozzzzz only...
A simple google would have got you this>>> (sound forge mac)
https://www.magix.com/gb/music/sound-fo ... e-pro-mac/
this is SF-3 FOR Mac.

Really a head scratcher some of the stuff with Soundforge.
- 7 had synthesis, then suddenly 10 does not
- in 7 zooming and scrolling with mouse wheel was working a million times better
- in 7 settings up toolbars was no brainer
- in 7 dragging parts of a file to empty area to make a new file was much smoother
list goes on lol
its kinda bonkers, "improve" software by taking away features and making it harder to work with
granted they added asio and vst support for example, but still it is very odd
disclaimer: last version i own is 10

Do you have the Pro version of 10? It does have synthesis.
It's unstable as all get-out and I really want to replace it.
But I've been using it for 9 years, know it really well, and some of its tools are damn near perfect -- when it's not crashing, that is -- and I really don't want to replace it.

I’m curious in what way do you find it unstable? I used 10 intensively for years without any problems except the drag n drop issue, although I don’t use VST plugins in there much. I’m on v11 nowadays.foosnark wrote: ↑Wed Jun 19, 2019 8:32 pmDo you have the Pro version of 10? It does have synthesis.

As for older versions, I think it did lose some magic along the way, but for me the scripting engine is a Godsend which I think started in v9. I use that pretty regularly. I haven’t been seriously tempted to update, although it’s great it’s actively being developed again and will no doubt upgrade at some point. I don’t find v11 lacks anything for my needs although I preferred the record method of 10, it v11 fixes the drag n drop issues of 10. I have wavelab lite which I use for just for single cycle waveforms, but I find it hard to work with as you can’t mimic SF transport and zoom behaviour which I thought would be a no brainier for Steinberg to implement. I love soundforge and wish every application would allow having zoom in/out as standard mousewheel behaviour, every other app needs CTRL to achieve it.

As in, frequent crashes. Updating the spectrum analyzer view seems to be a common place for it to crash, but sometimes applying effects -- internal or VST -- will do it.
When I tried version 12, it wouldn't even start up without immediately crashing, even with no VSTs assigned to it.

I'm getting a new PC in about 3 weeks, so I'll see if 10 (or maybe 13) is more stable on that, I guess.
But I'll also look into Acon Acoustica, which I wasn't even aware existed until I poked around here a bit...

@foosnark
I just got Acoustica Premium and love it. I switched back to Mac and needed something for that (I definitely prefer software that supported both windows and OS X )
Acoustica is stripped down in obscure/specialised features compared to SF but for audio editing it’s a complete dream for me. Spectral editing and viewing, batch editing, awesome effects (that can be used in other hosts!), stable as hell, great interface and control, a bunch of great tools, etc,
Definitely check out the demo. This is comping from a long time SF user.

Long time SF user here... not experienced your crash probs...
However, I'm not sure I like the way Magix have pushed SF12 ( I have both 11_Full and 12_studio) and probably 13, with the interface.
If I was starting again Acoustica would definitely be on the list to check out... I've been watching it's development for a while now.
Looks cool editor.

Hmm... the big downside of Acoustica is there doesn't seem to be any way to automate levels when applying an edit.
That's the greatest thing in Sound Forge. You can crossfade from dry to wet and back, or crossfade with Mix Paste, etc. I use that all the time.
