ambient noise filter??

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

Hi:
I've been using Tracktion for recording podcasts for a few months now & I'd really like to find a way to filter the ambient background noise. I know audacity has this where you just sample a silent section & apply to filter that white noise --- how do I do this in Tracktion 9 please?

Do these things cost money?

I keep trying to "Scan & Sort" plug-ins, but nothing seems to happen. On my settings page, the button for 'scan & sort' just shows "Scanning and Sorting" but nothing ever happens. Are there not built-in noise reducers?

generally, yes. proper noise removal is specialist stuff.

What are you expecting to happen? Scan and sort is for scanning for newly installed plugins. So Im unsure what it hasto do with your question.

No. Proper noise removal is specialist stuff. You could use a filter, or a gate, or both, for a crude cleanup, though.

Actually I did click on them & saw what looked like price tags of nearly $100. I thought surely this Tracktion software that costs $100+ wouldn't lack something as basic as ambient noise reducers & then offer only plugins that you'd have to then pay more for to have.

Considering that Audacity has a noise reduction tool; I'm just surprised there's not a built-in ambient tool of some sort for Tracktion.

As for the 'scan & sort' process & what I'm expecting: I guess I was expecting some sort of plug-in to pop up. I do at least have the built-in plugs installed & not even those show up. When I asked about it not pulling up anything & never showing that the scan has finished, I guess I was hoping for an idea on why my sorting process never yields anything (even if its going to say 'found no recently added/new plug-ins').

I guess that the relevance of asking about what plug-ins I currently have has to do with ambient noise filters, I guess to some extent I was hoping to just see a list of what is installed. As you mentioned gates & filters; I suppose that if I have some sort of filter I'd probably try something like that. Also, I suppose I didn't know if maybe I was just missing the ambient filter & if I could see a list of the current plugs, I could try solving some of my issues on my own. Of course, if I can't figure out how to see my plugs list, it'd be hard to figure that out before asking questions here.

But proper 'fingerprint' based noise reduction isnt basic, its actually very sophisticated.

Audacity is an audio editor, not a DAW, so its a mistaken assumption. In cliched 'apples vs oranges' style, that's kinda like assuming oranges can be used to make cider because apples can, if you see what I mean.
I cant think of a single DAW with 'fingerprint' type noise reduction built in.

I'm still not following this. You're say you're seeing the built-in plugins already. Have you installed other plugins? Are you thinking Tracktion installed other plugins but isnt showing you them?

something as basic as ambient noise reducers
Noise reduction is not really what i'd call "basic" at all, and this is one of the reason why (unlike stock eq and compressors) most DAWs do not include any in their included plugin bundle

My suggestion, if you want to go the free/cheap route, would be to try using Reafir (in noise reduction mode, obviously). I might not give you mindblowing results, but it can be quite ok if your noise fingerprint is good enough.

Also, you could use the KVR search to find a plugin suiting your needs :

I appreciate the responses: thank you.

I will admit I didn't realize that Audacity & Tracktion are such different programs. I do get the apples-oranges comparison. Gracias.

As for plug-in search/sort: when i go to the settings tab; then click on the Plugin option; nothing pops up in the plug-in list. When I run a scan/sort; nothing pops up.

I am using Linux and when I go into my usr directory, I can't find any vst files. Its possible that part of my issue is that stuff isn't fully configured. Does anyone know about linux/ubuntu? Maybe I just haven't gotten everything completely configured and am just not using the full Tracktion capability?

There's definitely some overlap, but, yeah, they've got rather different things they're focussed on.

Ah, sorry, Ive not used Tracktion on Ubuntu, so Im not really sure what you'd need to be doing there. But that may make thigns a bit more restricted for you with regard to your options; Im not aware of any of the usual noise reduction plugins being available in a Linux version.
