How do you prevent ear/speaker damage from accidental level spikes?

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

I guess it might depend on what you're doing, but when just working with VST's and audio in the DAW, this seems obvious. I set the volume so that 0dB on the master is still at a comfortable listening volume. So if I accidentally load an unusually loud preset or something, the worst that will happen is it will clip and sound distorted, but it won't break my speakers or ears.
