That lo-fi/rock sound, Whats actually going on?

So I mostly listen to rock and stuff. I notice on early albums from a lot bands there is this small/lo-fi quality to it that i really enjoy. I studied some in a spectrum analyezer and stuff. My first thought is like High-Pass or something. but its more than that. the drums are not too loud but still present, The bass is not very loud, but looking at the analyzer, all frequencies are pretty much level. idk whats going on... I'll just keep experimenting

yea maybe I don't know what to call it. just I notice how everything sounds so small, but together its full

Indie Rock. Very little reverb used and the drums have a very natural unprocessed sound.

most early bands albums are recorded before they get the masses of studio time thrown at them more successful acts will get.
so they are more often than not, rehearsed to almost perfection, then recorded as a band. with maybe an odd extra guitar line over dub or maybe vocals.

later on as bands get more studio time, they get more adventurous with layering, this requires more mixing, which leads to a more polished sound.


this is of course a generalisation, but it holds relatively true.

yea i guess that would be hard to do with samples. unless i just record my own drum samples
