Hi everyone,

I'm delighted to announce the first of what will be many sample packs for @Slate Digital's; Trigger 2 plugin (more formats to come in the coming weeks) which also includes the full compliment of 24 Bit .WAV files for use in any sampler.

I'm a massive fan of Queen and Roger Taylor and given that the band have had a resurgence of interest in recent months with the Bohemian Rhapsody film I thought it'd be fun to put together a sample pack that pays tribute to those glorious Queen drum sounds of the mid 70's era.

These samples are recorded with a view to sounding extremely natural, fat and full of tone and as a result they are capable of being used in a wide range of genres where an organic vibe is desired.

The pack features a gorgeous Ludwig classic maple kit with a 22x16 kick (In both dampened and wide-open tunings), 12x8, 13x10 and 16x16 toms and capped off with a 1968 Ludwig Supraphonic 400 chrome over brass snare drum.

Each drum comes with separate control over the close mic’ed signal, stereo overheads, a mono room, stereo room, auxiliary close vintage U87 track and a special print of the studio echo chamber enabling the user to quickly move between tight and punchy to wide open and ambient.

The kick and snare drums feature 6 velocity layers with multiple samples per layer and also includes a second articulation for triggering hard hits.
The toms feature 5 velocity layers with multiple samples.

The microphone list used to capture the samples is as follows:

Kick Close - RE-20
Snare Top - SM57
Overheads - Neumann U87
Stereo Room - Royer 121s
Mono Room - Coles 4038
Auxiliary close Mic - Vintage Silver Neumann U87

All captured through API preamps.

For a limited time anyone who purchases this sample pack will get a free Kick and Snare pack of The “Bites the Dust” kit which pays homage to the song of a similar name. It was also captured using the Ludwig 22x16 kick and Ludwig Supraphonic snare, but in alternative tunings. The microphone list for that capture includes:

Kick Inside - RE20
Kick Inside 2 - Sennheiser 421
Snare Top - Sennheiser 421
Top - Beyer M201
Bottom - AKG C414 Silver
Overheads - AKG C414 Gold

The intro price is £8 and will be in place until Christmas at https://www.eatsleepdrums.com/store

Please check out the sound examples here, or on my website at https://www.eatsleepdrums.com/store I hope you enjoy the pack and as always i'd love to hear your thoughts, suggestions or anything else drums related

Cheers, Mark.

Really enjoying these, tons of 70s Queen vibes all over these and they sound great. The wave files weigh in at an impressive 1GB of samples so you know they're gonna sound pretty natural. And they do. £8 is super cheap for these - less than the price of a pizza, healthier and I can enjoy them well after the pizza has come and gone!

Would love a Kontakt instrument which Mark has said he'll work on over the xmas period, but I might throw a quick Kontakt instrument together in the mean-time just for my own benefit (not being an owner of Trigger).

Thank you so much for the kind words my friend, I really appreciate it! I'm glad you're enjoying them. I'm definitely going to spend some time over Christmas getting these into a Kontakt patch and if I go that far then i'll sample a full complement of cymbals too and put together a full Roger Taylor themed kit. Should be fun!

Cheers,
Mark.

Hi everyone,

I thought i'd post this video which demonstrates the dynamics and velocity layer capabilities of the snare samples within this pack. This clip was originally recorded on a Vic Firth practice pad and then sample replaced with Trigger using the 'Bohemian Rhapsody Snare Rock Out' preset.

I've been working with Mark at EatSleepDrums to develop the Kontakt instruments for these samples ("Rhapsody In Bohemia"), the free "Bites The Dust" samples as well as the "9000 Classic" samples.

These samples are really close to that early 70s Roger Taylor/Queen sound, very big, open drums, very little damping and it's been a real pleasure building up the Kontakt instrument for them. There are over 1680 samples for this kit, so lots of dynamics, lots of round-robins and plenty of variation (the snare for example has 9 velocities and 9 round robins). Each mic has its own fader, mute and solo, and there is a global velocity curve to go from no dynamics (ie balls to the wall) through low dynamics (for an aggressive sound) right down to high dynamics (for a natural sound):

I would call the sound of them half-way between raw (ie needing lots of work to make them sit in a mix) and mix-ready (ie sound finished but that sound is baked in to the samples). They are completely usable out of the box and sound great.

"Bites The Dust" is free and even though it only has kick and snare, there are over 460 samples so plenty of detail, velocities, round-robins, mic channels and so on:

Here are a couple of audio clips I made using nothing but the Kontakt instruments (plus a bit of guitar and bass to give some context) and a touch of Airwindows NC-17 to bump the levels up. All the drums are midi, no post processing, the sounds are just as they came out of Kontakt! (Cymbals from the Room Sounds BlastingRoom kit).

Enjoy.

Thin Lizzy supported Queen back in the day, so I'll take a peek. :)

Part of Roger Taylor's sound, I think, was he was quite a heavy hitter (plus the hi-hat barks with the snare). Whereas Brian Downey was a lighter player and his sound is thinner and less in-your-face. The drums seemed to take more of a backwards role whereas, of course, Roger's drumming was very prominent and forward sounding. I think this is reflected pretty well in these samples.

That sounds about right. There was definitely a lot of Jazz (blues, funk, soul etc) in Downey's playing style. I really liked Queen, so I'm interested but Lizzy were my Number One. :)
