I'm working on making my own MIDI Keyboard. I want it to be compact, but also have a decent amount of keys so I'm not too entirely restricted. I'm not a really serious musician.

Is 49 or 54-keys enough?

Or maybe even 61, if they aren't too much larger.

I'm no keyboardist but for me 49 was always a PITA, too much octave button.

Depends what you want to play. I have a 61 key MIDI controller as that's what I consider the minimum to be comfortable playing anything other than piano (I have a piano, but wouldn't try on the MIDI controller). Even with 61 keys I sometimes find myself wanting to play outside of its range.

61 keys: 85 cm wide

I read somewhere that there are 54 key keyboards.

Which would you suggest, for something compact, but not too restricting? I mean, 61 adds like at least a foot more, but 49 might be somewhat restricting.

n=(x12)+1.
or do mini keys maybe come in different numbers?

Maybe it was a mini Keyboard layout, I don't remember. Sorry, I'm new to this sort of stuff : /

I agree. 49 is a bit of an awkward size. It is too much if you don't play and just use it to key in midi notes (for that 25 or 32 is plenty). And is is not nearly enough if you actually play the keyboard. I am currently using a 49 one but I will most likely replace that soon with a full 88 keyboard for playing the keys and an additional 25 one for everything else.

Ok, I think 61 keys might be enough, while not being to restricted or huge.

Probably, but they would be useless for piano work or anything similar. I have an Arturia KeyStep that has 32 mini keys, but it's way too small for a piano and I can't play it without watching the keyboard because of the smaller sized keys. I just use it for monophonic lines, making noise, sequencing, etc.

yeah i found the old korg mini keys annoying, not that im great on full size keys, but your fingers expect a certain stretch from muscle memory, so you're forever flubbing keys
