NYT articles tend to go behind paywall, but it appears public ATM. Long, interesting and horrifying article for me, discuss.

TLDR: a whole building full of multitrack and master recordings burnt up in 2008, and it was covered up.

the company has issued a statement disputing the characterization of the damage it caused to the company’s archives, saying the article contains “numerous inaccuracies, misleading statements, contradictions and fundamental misunderstandings of the scope of the incident and affected assets.”

they had copies of most of it tho... they just lost the originals

They had and continue to have (digital) copies of mono or stereo mastered recordings that were released commercially. The big loss is in the multitrack tapes, which contain the unmixed original recordings, and session tapes, which have unreleased material.

The statement released by UMG is accurate, but was stated as such in the original article anyway, :shrug:
