I've always been partial to Micheal Hedges version. I used to do this version in a set.

But pretty much anyone does better Dillon than Dillon. Similar to Bruce Springsteen. Can't stand him, but like quite a few covers of his stuff.

By the way ... whoever that Cat chick is in the Oasis cover is F'n terrible. I never thought I'd pine for the Oasis version of a song. But for f**ks sake that was god awful.

By the way ... totally agree about the Steve Hillage Hurdy Gurdy cover. Totally kicks ass.

More Michael! He was the king of solo guitar covers. I typically like his version better than originals.
For example, you'd have to chop off my arms and legs and strap speakers to my head to make me listen to Fine Young Cannibals ... but I like this version

And of course more famous stuff like

An example of doing Springsteen better by far than Springsteen.

What's interesting about that is that the cover is probably more apropos if you are just singing the lyrics. However, if you understand and take in the massive Elvis sarcasm of the original you might appreciate it more. The context of the original is actually pretty spot on. And the guitar dude in the cover couldn't hold Peter Green's left nut. But as just a song, yeah the cover is probably more in line with the lyrics/vibe.

So as a parody, the original is untouchable.
As as a straight up interpretation of the chords and words, the cover kicks ass.

Is it sarcasm or just a bad impression? And who the hell is Peter Green when he's at home? I doubt he's had as many Top 10 hits as Jo Callis, who left The Rezillos to join Human League just as they hit their commercial stride. Coincidence?

It's really hard to take you seriously when you post ignorant shit like that. Who is Peter Green? Who is Mark Doty? You know google might help you a bit.

Yes it's parody. It was actually really funny and subversive at the time. People have been stealing Peter Green riffs for 60 years.

EDIT: I decided to edit out my comment about hating 80s syntho-pop because it doesn't really matter to this discussion. There is a context to the original song that has to be understood to "get it". As a stand alone song in isolation it isn't going to impress anyone. If you take it in the context of the time it's brilliant.

I also like the punk interpretation of it as it actually fits as a stand alone no context version.

Really? Have you never heard Albatross? It was a massive world wide hit in the late 60s. Sadly Peter's not home much these days as he died in 2000 (iirc). I was lucky enough to see him on his last tour. A real genius.

Well that's weird. I remember being shocked to hear of his death shortly after seeing him play live in the UK. Bloody internet :tantrum: I don't know what to believe these days. Are David Bowie and Lou Reed still alive and kicking too?
