Well, speaking of "Johnny" Williams (as he was apparently known back then) and confessing to guilty pleasures, I have to admit to liking this when I was a kid...

Loved that show as a kid, though when the show started to revolve around Dr. Smith, who should've been 'spaced' at the first opportunity, I lost interest. Nattering Ninny! Little Billy Mumy playing an old Martin guitar was kewl!

I actually think it's pretty horrible and I can hear quite a bit of Star Wars in certain parts. Of course, I've never been able to watch that film all the way through, which may influence my perception of the music.Dasheesh wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 1:49 pm weren't no computer dohickies in 1978 y'all! holy smokes... for one man to conceive and bring together such a piece out of his own mind! if someone had come to you an said I need music for my superman movie... I need it to say SUPERMAN. You would be dumbfounded. How iconic. To make something so timeless it lives in history!
I prefer Thunderball, both the film and the title song.Googly Smythe wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 2:40 pm off to watch this film...

Really? I think Carpenter's music is awful, the furthest thing from "incidental music" imaginable. It takes me out of the moment every time.
You know, it amazes me how many people seem to have the inability to separate things they like for nostalgic reasons from things that were actually good. Honestly, it does my head in.

You mean this one?

Yeah, it was third on my list, after 633 Squadron and Thunderbirds. Someone has already put Thunderbirds up so I'll finish with 633 Squadron -

Of course, putting things up with no explanation is a waste of time so here goes. 633 Squadron is the perfect "boys own adventure theme" but you just have to hear it to know it has something to do with flight. Until I went looking for it on YouTube just now, I had forgotten it was about Mosquitos (which I thought was a different movie, appropriately enough named "Mosquito Squadron"). There was supposed to be a remake a few years ago but I don't know what happened to it.
Thunderbirds is amazing because it is such a great orchestral piece in it's own right. It's something I doubt I will ever get tired of hearing.
The opening theme from DS9 grabbed me from the first time I watched the show. The way it builds up to the fanfare really gets you in. It was on at 11pm in Australia but I always used to plug the TV into my stereo and listen to it loud through my headphones.

John Williams' entire film scoring career was borrowed from the work of Gustav Holst (with a smattering of Strauss and Wagner).

Listen to this to hear every John Williams theme in one gulp.

Yeah, except Holst I like (also Richard Strauss and some Wagner) - it's like Williams took all the worst bits and mashed them up.Dunbar wrote: ↑Tue Jan 15, 2019 7:20 am John Williams' entire film scoring career was borrowed from the work of Gustav Holst (with a smattering of Strauss and Wagner).

Yeah, that's a real earsore. Shame, as I quite liked the series, it was the most warlike Trek, which is a good thing. Producers must have realized the power of the theme song as they replaced it with instrumental versions in later seasons.

This, if not the greatest, one of the greatest, anyway.
Death in Venice by Luchino Visconti, Mahler Adagietto Symphony No. 5
Just listen the last 1 minute, if you are unpatient. And then tell me, its not great.

Has anyone mentioned Maurice Jarre's score for Lawrence of Arabia?
If not, consider it mentioned.

Yes very lovely - in a similar vein I also love Aram Katchaturian's gorgeous theme from Spartacus that was used in The Onedin LineHarry_HH wrote: ↑Tue Jan 15, 2019 4:09 pm This, if not the greatest, one of the greatest, anyway.

Here's a little break from all the John Williams and Hans Zimmer stuff

Probably not the greatest, but it is pretty cool.

Returning to the subject of ripoffs, I thought Tangerine Dream's blatant stealing of Steve Reich for Risky Business was pretty well-done (though Reich was not at all happy with it) :

And then there's Michael Nyman, who is pretty upfront about reworking old Baroque themes for his Peter Greenaway scores:

Guy likes his saxophones, and I respect that.
