What should I do with a single monitor

Okay, I know this might sound stupid. I saw this monitor (M-Audio BX5 Carbon 5" 2-Way 70W Active Studio Monitor (Black)) was on a good clearance sale at B&H earlier, so I bought it immediately. Since I have never purchased high quality monitors before, I assumed it would come in pair :dog: but when I opened the packages, there was only one speaker all alone... To make the matter worse, this model seems to be discontinued (hence the clearance sale, of course). Also, B&H requires customer to pay for return shipping.

So I have no idea what should I do with this great yet lonely monitor. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Good question. Monitors are usually sold in pairs. Seems like we should have read the fine print a little better on this purchase. :). Good chance the other was broken in shipping or something. Maybe a studio needed a new one and they sold it off. Who knows, but they had an extra sitting around. If you have two cheaper monitors you are using as left and rights, I might use it as a sub, or a center. Otherwise, maybe you can get a similar monitor elsewhere and pair them?

sold in pairs, as in boxed in pairs? that's never the case, no.
when they have 1 monitor left at the store it's typically because it was returned for an exchange and they got stuck with it at the end.
for something as common as a bx-5, it's not impossible to find a single one on ebay, kijiji and such...

Either order a second one (so you paid twice what you expected) or you send it back and pay shipment. Or put it on eBay and sell with some loss. Or dedicate yourself to producing in mono.

Whatever, it's going to cost you learning money.

Set it in the middle of your living room and put a window glass on it. Voíla - improvised coffee table.

Mine came boxed in a pair...

Thanks for all the replies guys. I just have another question, say if I decide to buy another monitor, is it okay to get a second hand one? Will there be significant difference between brand new speakers and used ones?

Yep, this is very curious, assuming you do speak about the D2 version, I'm quite sure they were sold as a set everywhere. A second hand pair maybe an option; they are not that expensive, around €100.

why dedicate, save the single monitor for mixing in mono, mixing in mono is a common technique.
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

It's not a 'left' or 'right' speaker, so perfectly good for mono. Do you have a guitar? Plug it in and see what happens!
