Hope you like it!

There will be a new version tomorrow. I've added a text edit box for entering wave file names for auto-export from the script. Something for Teksonik :)

Not really.

Post

I've just updated UHMate DX with three additions. The first is a script for algorithm 32 - you know, the really boring one :)

The second is an editable text box for knocking out wave files on the fly.

The third (inspired by the dullness of algorithm 32 when expressed as a wavetable) is a per operator LFO. There are two knobs for this per operator LFOF = frequency and LFOD = depth or distortion. The LFO frequency goes from 1-to-64 cycles per 256 frame wavetable.

Since it's not possible to effect pitch modulations satisfactorily in the context of a wavetable I've assigned the LFO to the phase ramp in a way that introduces phase distortion. This adds some interesting movement to the sounds without affecting the zero crossing points of each wave cycle.

Here's the link:

https://charlesdickens.neocities.org/UHMate%20DX.zip

The zip file contains the UHMate DX editor, base text file for algorithm 32, the generated uhm script, plus a wave file generated from the uhm script.

And the updated GUI:

I've just added feedback to all operators as opposed to just one. This is as part of a process to mimic the Reface DX, but with six operators as opposed to four. Sounds amazing, especially with the LFO modulated phase distortion! I need to change the feedback settings so that we can do square wave feedback as well as sawtooth. I'll extend this to do other feedback waveforms.

Other than any ideas/requests that come in then this will probably be the final version.

Here's a patch for HIve with a wavetable made using the new UHMate DX based on algorithm 5 from the Yamaha DX7, but with added feedback for all operators and LFO modulated phase distortion.

Has anyone come up with any nice scripts that they'd like to post here or am I pissing in the dark?

I really love this idea, I had a similar idea but didn't execute on it (maybe I'll have a go at making an editor like this for the learning experience).

I wasn't sure what to do with it until I just downloaded and had a play, I made a bunch of .uhm scripts - I can't visualise the result the knobs would made so did it by trial and error, and saving/refreshing the folder in Hive to load them, it not a bad way to work.
So if anyone isn't sure what to do, have a play around and get a feel by trial and error.

I gave a few of the ones I liked a name and made some basic presets.
Feel free to try them out! :hyper:

Thanks cytospur, your efforts are definitely appreciated!

It's all beyond me, personally, but it sure sounds interesting! Hopefully some other folks will get some use out of it and post some results. Thanks! :tu:

That's what I'm worried about. I thought a GUI would make things more easy for people. You don't have to worry about the actual scripts other than loading the base script and saving the exported script. Maybe the DX one is too complex. I can come up with something else instead. The uhm script approach is amazing and very expansive. Maybe a multi-bandpass filter would be easier to understand? Or something else. I'm open to ideas!

I should make a mini-tutorial I guess, but there's very little fun in that

Thanks for the patches. I especially like the frog spring one!

Note that if you use the uhm script that's generated you only have to refresh wavetables upon the initial creation of the script. After that it gets updated automagically, but you probably know that already.

Thanks for your feedback :tu:

As I mentioned, I'm using Flowstone from DSPRobotics, but that's only really for the GUI. The code uses Ruby (also conveniently inside Flowstone) and is just a text substitution routine (using gsub) using text place holders as can be seen in the base text document. I'm sure someone with better coding chops could do better!

Thanks for the UHMate DX cytospur , doing FM/PM uhms for Hive makes so much more sense to me now now than trying to actually script it. I've made little of use to others so I won't share the semirandom nonsense I've come up with but I'm enjoying the journey a lot (yup presently I'm pretty much one of those horrible processoriented people yu may have heard about). :D

What I'm not sure about at all is how to change to a different algorithm and how to know how that algorithm is actually structured (except offcourse doing a websearch and figuring algorithm number this and that is structured like this and that). How about a simple way of chosing an algorithm and a way of seing that algorithms structure displayed visually withing the app? Pretty please? It would so helpful to those of us who know a bit about FM/PM (this is Phase Modulation I'm pretty sure though it's traditionally called FM) but who haven't fully memorized all DX7 algortihms as we never had one.

Also is there any way to have options for different degrees of randomization and randomizing only a selection of parameters? Different degrees as in for instance randomizing something by a given percentage so that we can randomize something by just 1% or 10% and quickly come up with variations on settings we like? Or would that be a bit too much of a challenge to implement?

@cytospur unfortunately I don't have any time to check it out... deeply involved in Hive 2 & CVilization last minute stuff before Superbooth.

I love the idea, but I must admit, the 6-operator editor looks more scary to me than an actual script :clown:

personally, using script code to make a WT is very non musical, using a dx gui to do it is even more geeky (just use a dx synth?)

i just load samples i find useful and stitch them together, but i also dont use hive, so
