Steve:

Let me know if you try the MIDI ring - I watched some videos and it looks interesting. Thank you for the kind words! The Zendrum is a lot of fun.

Impressive polyphonic playing. :tu: Do you consciously avoid certain voicings, in order not to run into the four-notes-rectangle limitation?

Yep, that is very nice.
Bitwig, against the constitution.

Great one, Steve/Reckon! I’ve added it to both the LinnStrument Owners and Roger’s Favorites playlists.

Thanks! I wouldn't say I avoid certain voicings per se, although if you're committed to using one the hands might be more separated than you'd like, given that limitation. Certainly there are times I run into that issue though while improvising (almost did while doing this video). No doubt if there was one thing I could change about the LS that would be it (with second being only 3 notes in a column). I'd also love a bigger one so I could have a full 88 keys/notes without having to create a split to do so (I know for certain that ain't never going to happen!)

Thanks Roger! I figured you might like that one, given your affinity for jazz piano! It really has been interesting how, for me anyway, this format has facilitated a whole new world of harmonic improv, one that is really fun to explore. I think for folks who don't really care about becoming world class pianists but want to incorporate cool voicings into their productions or while sketching out ideas, the LS really offers a very efficient way in. Also, when doing orchestral sketches, or just fooling around with orchestral software, it's awesome how you can get some really nice wide voices that you couldn't reach real time on a traditional keyboard. Anyway, hope all is well with you!

Thanks, Steve. It’s a pleasure to watch how you approach chord voicing on the fourths note layout. If you ever have some time, it would be nice if you could make an informal video in which you discuss and demonstrate your approach to chord voicings. I think others would find it helpful.

Pardon the cross post (and clipping part way through) but here's a live set I played over the weekend, with Linnstrument driving Modor nf1m.

Steve:

Awesome video! I enjoyed hearing these chords when we played together and love the solo version even more! I agree with Roger - a video about your approach to chord shapes and voicings on LinnStrument would be very valuable and helpful.

Thanks.

Thanks so much guys! I am actually planning to do a video at some point soon that will include how I've approached voicings. I've kind of always assumed it was an afterthought for most LS owners (playing chords to begin with, that is), but if a few folks get something from it anyway would be worthwhile!

Ditto.
You are in for a disappointment when you want to play “So What”. :hihi:
(A very famous tune using the, at the time all new and modern, fourth-stacking with a major third on top: d-g-c-f-a.)
Yes, there are workarounds for that chord, but the worst thing is actually, when you are just playing a simple triad in the left hand, and some solo notes in the right, and you unexpectedly run into the rectangle limitation, because you were gliding from row to row, and thus briefly playing two keys.

Thank you very much again - I've never really taken to releasing stuff on video but think some of the set was recorded the other night so I'll see if turns up at any point and will post a link if so...

Sorry to keep clogging the board with videos, but I've basically spent the better part of the day with Pigments 2 and I have to say I'm very, very impressed with the workflow. It is super easy to produce cool sounding (at least to me) generative tracks. In this one i threw a couple together in literally like 3 minutes total, using the turing randomizer with the granular sampler (and a bunch of other parameters), in one instance with a guitar harmonic sample I threw in and the other using literally the first preset that came up, but tweaking it and granulating it.

Anyway, I would recommend checking out the demo if you're so inclined:
