I'd say that I cheat on it with Usine, but actually they can be used together in sync easily. I just use one as extension for another when I need it or feel like it. And for live setups in Usine I could make virtual controller tailored for my Bitwig set.

kvrsw2424 already answered, but I have to add that I'm actually beta-testing new version (Hollyhock 4) and perfect sync is available through VST Bridge, sending midi clock through virtual midi cables tends to drift bpm after all. also now it's super easy to get multiple channels out of Usine into Bitwig, midi in/out and audio to Usine, but only 2 stereo pairs as Bitwig doesn't support more input channels for VST.

as for why I need it, that is to cover anything that Bitwig doesn't have. sort of like what M4L for Ableton could do, but way easier to patch and usable with multi-touch.

Audacity for normalisation and mixdown to mono (for samplers) and bit depth/sample rate conversion outside Bitwig's narrow scope. Sometimes Audacity can't do it either so I go to Batch Processor but it is at times buggy. I rarely enter the grid since I have a eurorack setup but I like it a lot when I do.
