Ok support got back go me (quick!). It's because of the extra nodes created by the pen tool that the average gain number in the menu differs from the graph. I found a better way, that is to use the pointer tool instead of pencil. That way there is only 1 node and that matches the overall gain setting.
however is noticed that upon the first click+drag, the graph and sample image are not updated, nor is gain number setting (or pan, all parameters behave the same) in the inspector panel. If you first create the node and then drag it works fine:
