Any problems with bringing the volume down on the
master volume when mixing down? (Tracktion T6) I keep reading that this
should always be kept at "0". Can't see where lowering it would
degrade sound.
My tracks are not clipping. But when I send the whole mix through a VU meter,
the level seems to be hot. Makes sense to just adjust the master fader.

No, go ahead because that's exactly what it's there for. Lower as you need, and listen to the results. Keeping the master at 0 is a good recommendation to lower your individual tracks first when mixing...but you're focused on mastering, which is the last step. You won't break anything, so don't hesitate to experiment.
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.

the point is "gain staging". if master level needs too much correction, it is wise to look into this factor.
a few dB should be no problem.
