Is this normal, or is this a problem that needs to be fixed? On my Dell XPS 13, an instance of TX16Wx only takes 2% of my CPU with a looped sample or soundfont instrument without release, but when I use high quality sounds (esp. those with long release time) from a soundfont, a single channel takes >10% of my CPU. When I made 4 tracks using 4 channels from one instance of the VST, the CPU was 27% and not something you would see on most soft samplers.

What is "high quality sounds"? If you have long release times, may overlapping regions, etc, you will play more voices simultaneously. This will take more CPU (in fact, quite linearly in the amount of voices). The new build, 3.0.17, has an added "active voices" meter which might give some hint as to why you are seeing higher cpu usage. Tip is to use slot poly limit to maybe reduce the load for any given program.
