Splash the cash on this stuff by all means, but you owe it to yourself to have a go first. You'd be amazed at how easy this stuff is. Pop down the charity shop, buy a toy, crack it open, get a length of wire, go nuts. You don't even need a soldering iron to experiment with this stuff. Knowledge of electronics is a big minus. :P

Of course they'll tend to break more quickly if you're a crap solderer like me. Here's one I made a while ago (RIP). Recorded through headphones plugged into the mic socket while balanced on my knee, hence poor quality.

Yep, I've got a Speak&Math, Speak&Read, a Talking Teacher, and a few other odds and ends that have been waiting to be bent for years now. I'm sure I'll get around to it sooner or later... :oops:
