Basic operation of Sonigen

So I have the trial version running under WinXP operating via my midi contoller keyboard, works fine. After watching some YouTube videos of professionals operating modular systems, I didn't see any keyboards being played although they were present. The modules seem to be playing on their own when started, usually a repeating pulse sound which they alter and continue to add sounds using the modules rather than the keyboard, they just keep adding to it in steps and it sounds wonderful.
Problem: the Sonigen system doesn't seem to do that, it makes no sound unless I press a key on the keyboard.
Question: Is the Sonigen capable of producing sound on its own without using a keyboard? If so, how does one get it to produce that initial sound, then build up from that initial sound?
