Very basic question - I'm pretty clueless in some areas of computer music. At some point I'm going to need to update to Windows 10.

I was thinking at least as an interim to just update to Windows 10 on my present machine.

If I do that will all my stuff that is Windows 10 compatible just continue working (e.g Cubase, plugins) or do I have to uninstall them and re-install them?

It will continue to work.

BTW, i'm not sure if it's still possible to upgrade a running Windows 7 for free to Windows 10. I know for sure that it's still possible to activate Windows 10 with your Windows 7 key though. So, if you plan to get the upgrade for free, i guess the only way is a reinstall of Windows.

ok, thanks for that. I'm expecting a few things will stop working - more in the domain of Software Editors - I have one for an Emu Morpheus that I think was done on Windows 98 - it works on Windows 7!

99.9 % of the stuff I used in former OS's still works on Windows 10.

A few games with an ancient Securom protection won't work.

If you can, get a second disc and install 10 fresh (it can be still an upgrade technically). Plug the old disc back and on most systems you can pick which disc to boot to at startup, then you can boot back to 7 anytime, when 10 breaks hell on you.

ok, so to be clear - do a full install of 10 - which I assume means buying it (which I can do).

It will normally then boot to 10 - but if I put in the 7 disk (which I have) - I just put the disk in and hit one of the F keys and it will ask me whether to boot from the 7 on the disk or the 10 on the hard disk?

You can activate Windows 10 with your old Windows 7 key, so, nope you won't have to buy it.

It's still free to upgrade Win7 to WIn10 without doing a clean install, if you use the Accessibility upgrade tool (no longer available on ms's website):

Just enable magnifier or similar in control panel, then run the installer. It will, however, only update you to 1709 initially - you'll need to do an upgrade install using 1809 installation media afterwards (create a USB stick installer using the Windows Media Creation tool) to get up to date. Have done this on about 10 machines, without error.

As chk says, you only need 7 key to install 10 as an upgrade. Assuming you have a desktop and not a laptop, you can have two discs connected at once, check your bios manual, usually there is an option to hit a key when comp is starting and then a boot menu pops up and you can choose which disc to boot to. You need to restart to change system, but it's easy and quite bulletproof way of keeping the old stuff operational while you are settling in with new system.

I would just make a clone of the HDD and then do an upgrade install, rather than pissing around getting licenses etc working on a new setup.
That way you're covered if something doesn't work, but you don't have to waste a bunch of time.

This is only my opinion but I would NOT upgrade. Been using Win 7 Ultimate since it came out and would NEVER upgrade to Win 10... because 8 and 10 are so confusing... Win 7 is "understandable", so user friendly.

Confusing? Maybe for people coming from Mac, who are not used to be able to configure their operating system...

I would NEVER return back to Windows 7. January 2020 is the date anyway. From that point, you won't be getting any more updates for Windows 7.

I use couple of other machines for the important and serious work which are not connected to the Net, for browsing I really do not need security on this laptop.

Updating from Windows 7 64bit to Windows 10
