Yes, Mojopack does need administrator privileges. It's a fantastic program, but this reason alone prevented me from buying it. But I don't know that it can be done another way.

I need to try some of the more recent software on my flash drive. I'll update the first post as things are added by me or others.

Has anyone tried to catalog the VSTs/VSTis that can be run from a portable drive? Particularly non-free plugins?

I haven't tried too many, but there are several that will. Any plugin that comes as a .dll should run just fine. I have used the GVST plugins and others successfully.

That list would likely grow HUGE compared to the list in this thread.

By the way, I'll update this thread soon. So if you have any to add to the list, just post them here!

Here is what I have working so far:

1. EXT- needs ASIO, but runs perfect in another host
2. Phrazor

how do you get Phrazor working from flash drive on a computer without installing it? It seemed to me that the regular installation process is absolutely necessary to make use of it. (standalone and plugin versions)

OK, got it, -kool!

I just asked a question about the portability of Wusik over in the Wusik forum (here: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=204745) and found out that Wusik v4 can be added to the list.

This is the note from William K (the developer of Wusik):

------------------------------------

Since V4 we no longer use the Windows registry, its all saved on a wIni file. So yes, you can use on a flash-drive.

Wk

-------------------------------------

There is currently a group buy on for Wusik so if you don't have it (or, like me, have an early version) and want it then you have a couple of days to take advantage of the current group buy (see http://www.wusik.com/w/purchase.html for details).

So - eXT (v1) for a host, Wusik plus a few other goodies and I'm sorted, apart from ASIO. As some of the notes in this thread are a bit old now, does anyone have a current view on the best portable (i.e. no footprint on the host PC at all) host to run eXT in? Is Tunafish the way to go?

Regards,

Derek.

eXT2 doesn't need ASIO any more.

Yeah, sorry. I haven't updated this lately. I need to. It'll get done though soon, now that I'm thinking about it.

not sure if it was mentioned, but ABox2 runs just fine from my flash drive (i'm always plugging this thing - no pun intended).

some of the ixi apps run on it as well.

There's a variant called geekmenu (http://geek-menu.sourceforge.net/) that allows you to customize things, encrypt files etc.

Also check out http://www.portablefreeware.com/ - there are a few music & audio things there, and there's some good advice about getting apps to run portably.

Very cool thread, if you don't mind me saying...

Has anyone any specific information on wear?
I'm told you're not supposed to run apps from a USB-stick because it greatly reduces the lifespan/eventual reliability.
But then again they may be better quality now?

Anyway! I'm going to try this with Renoise and a bunch of samples tonight! :D

bump for an old thread.

For anyone else needing an electronic "Swiss Army knife" for music/audio, here's some more stuff that'll run from a USB stick:

r8brain
Waveknife
Streamosaur
Generatosaur
DelayCalculator - link currently down :( [EDIT: ...but I think there's something similar built into the current version of Wavosaur, which can also run from a memory stick]

(Also RenameMaster, which is useful for renaming samples in bulk)
