My favorite all time reverb is this monstrous delay on the song All Cats Are Grey by The Cure.

What Valhalla verb would you use to get the sound on those drums?

I've listened to this several times, and I still can't figure out what reverb to use. But it is a GREAT song. I need to check out those first few Cure albums (the earliest one I own is Pornography).

There were only a few options available at the time:

- EMT140. Strong contender, especially with a lot of predelay. I'd use ValhallaPlate for this.
- EMT250. The earliest digital reverb. I'd use the Sanctuary mode in VintageVerb for this, but it doesn't sound like an EMT250 to my ears.
- Lexicon 224, using the Percussion Plate. Dirty Plate in VintageVerb would be the one to use.
- AMS RMX16. I don't have anything that directly corresponds. It might be a bit early for that plugin.

The reverb sounds very stereo to me, in that a drum from the left will have reverb in the left channel, and vice versa. But there is a lot more reverb in the drums on the left. So I can't tell if it is a naturally stereo reverb algorithm (like Dirty Plate / 224 Percussion Plate), or if it is a mono-input reverb with a lot of panning.

My Valhalla suggestions: VintageVerb Dirty Plate in 70s mode, with Attack at 0%, Size at 100%, and other parameters to taste. Or, any of the algorithms from ValhallaPlate.

Yeah, I dig that song so much. Best track on what is a such a spacious and sad album. So much space, and they let it breath. Pornography on the other hand… tries to suffocate you.

As to recreating this sound, I’ve tried a ton of different reverbs, but the transients always come through too heavy and bright. I’ll try your suggestion.
