It's horrible.

I don't know what they're going for here at all.

It sounds terrible. It looks like it's a terrible UI. The video synthesizer thing is... :nutter:

It's just bewildering. Like Sarah Palin trying to put a coherent sentence together.

Looks like a 2002 softsynth in the body of a 90's remote control.

Sounds slightly better, still somewhere between "meh" and "WTF?"

so...they decided not to use a screen ... but then, it uses a screen... albeit a pricey tablet or a television. concept fail ?

also, the dev says the video synthesis takes place on the visual device (i.e tab) that you are connected to ... not sure if he mis-spoke here ? ... if that's the case, it's not really a video synth, surely..

Has a listing now at Sweetwater:

Must be due out any time now.

at least they've stopped lying about it being a video synthesizer.

so ya, the 'synthesizer' is actually an app on your iOS device, and the OP-Z just sequences it. even the app, from what we've seen previously of it, doesn't seem like a bona fide video synthesizer ... more like an animation sequencer/arranger.

annnnyway, I have the same misgivings as I did previously ... using an iOS device as the screen is going to rule quite some people out. I have an OP-1, and an iPad ... sometimes I use them together, but the OP-1 gets 95% of its usage completely independently, of the iPad at least. I guess some kind of iPhone or iTouch would be the ideal iOS screen for the OP-Z, owing to their diminutive size compared to the iPad.

I guess I'll reserve judgement until it's out and braver, more cash rich people than me give it a go and report back.

by rights this thing shouldn't be more than $400 .... if it was good you might talk yourself into a $500 purchase. but it's teenage engineering so you know it's gonna be $799

Ok, I guess I am that guy :D
I got the pre order (sold out in 2 hours), I am VAT registered, so it cost about 440 GBP with the roll bag.

I sold my OP1 as I had just stopped taking it with me on travels...the pocket sized z and step sequencer will suit me more. I can’t think of a time I will not have my iPhone as a screen, but you can do everything without a screen anyway!

Some of the early sound demos are very good indeed, someone has already posted an EP made with just the Z...hopefully I will find out and report in a couple of weeks!

Yeah. I am in the same camp.

Problem with using an iDevice/phone or whatever is that I'm staring at the damn thing the whole day anyway. Just like the computer. And I rarely remember to switch off notifications when I want to focus - and of course then the messages come flowing in, and I'm off distracted once again.

And what's even weirder... I really don't find anything interesting about its sound either.

I'm not remotely interested in it, but I'll reserve judgement for some months and see what will happen with it. I've been wrong/surprised before. Would be cool to hear Red Means Recording doing a long session with it.

I sure will!

There are (finally) some good 'how to' videos finding there way on-line on production models, this is the best so far...you definitely do NOT need the screen to use it, its just an option!
