For all you FM lovers out there...

How to make that sound...

VOPM

Sorry guys, haven't used a Mac for music in a while. Funny, because I grew up using only Macs.

Yes, I think it's definitely high time someone out there made a serious FM softsynth with full .opm compatibility. I'd like to see something that can do everything the FS1R can do, and then some. With Diva-quality filters, too. For straight waveforms with loads of personality, I think it's really hard to beat FM synthesis.

I do really like FM8, but I think somebody needs to take this technology far further than NI dares. I want a real enthusiastic, boutique software shop with enough resources to do it right to take up the cause.

Thanks Dr Washington!

These will be overused

Awesome work, DrWashington! Thank you very much!
I wasn't aware of .opm files and VOPM (very 1st post of the topic): I've just given a shot to this combo, and it's very, very cool indeed!
Thanks again for your work and for sharing!

Vectorman, maybe?

Sure thing! Glad you're enjoying the files. I just checked, and it looks like the .opm pack is now well over 4,000 downloads. Didn't really expect so many people to get into it!

I sure wish someone would contact 'Sam' and get him to relinquish the source code so someone could make a modern spec'd Super VOPM or something. I still love the way this little synth sounds, but it's not the easiest synth in the world to use (e.g., having to send it NRPNs to boost the volume, turn on portamento, etc.)

Still, the sound is pretty much dead on, and that's the most important thing. :)

Sorry about commenting on an older thread... but does anyone know where one could find a copy of the VPM2OPM tool that used to be on Shiru's site? I have scoured his page and I cannot find it, and I haven't had much luck with google searches.

I've been super busy with work/life lately, but I'm still lurking out there. I may still have it on one of my hard drives. I just moved into a house and I'll try and remember to post something once my studio is set back up. Here's hoping this will be a really productive year for music!

I have made some converters for OPM files and a bunch of presets in .tfi format as well for my FMDrive 2612 VST , they are compatible with VGMM too.
You can grab it freely at http://www.alyjameslab.com :)

Also for those who also like to mess with the 2nd Sega Genesis soundchip aka (PSG Sn76489) which is also the primary Sega Master System soundchip,
I just realased : Super PSG (SPSG)VST, an ultra accurate(Sn76489 extended) Sega Master System sound chip emulation
with a ton of features :)

squidlarkin wrote:So, I downloaded this (otherwise amazing) library and found one glaring omission: M.U.S.H.A, my favorite Genesis soundtrack of all time. Turns out the ripping program chokes on the periods in the filename. So I re-ripped the files and I thought I'd share them here. Now you can all make your own totally sweet FM metal tracks. Enjoy!

MUSHA OPM patches.zip

Arrghhh!!! file no longer exists - Please for the love of god does anyone still have this zip of the MUSHA sounds ?

I haven't been checking this for a while, but yeah, looks like it was the dots. I ripped it myself and uploaded it to the same place as my original file dump: http://www.mediafire.com/download/l3lii ... _files.zip

Enjoy!

Somebody please take this and do something cool with it. This synth should not be abandoned!

I've added a dump of all these files in sysex, which can be imported directly into FM8: http://www.mediafire.com/file/x5ww7d3wf ... -sysex.zip

Special thanks to Martin Tarenskeen for his awesome DXconvert utility!

Unfortunately, there's not batch import for sysex in FM8... really wish there was. I can't get this Excel macro trick to work on my machine, but somebody may be able to figure it out and post more detailed instructions: https://www.adsrsounds.com/fm8-tutorial ... -into-fm8/

It's 2 in the morning and I'm done tinkering. Time to geek out on these sounds for a little bit and then crash.

Also thanks to Martin for making me aware of this site: http://picopicose.com/software.html

Apparently, this guy has taken on Sam's VOPM project and renamed it VOPMex (but the .dll name is the same). There's a 64-bit version now, and it's working great with Cubase 9.5 on my end.

I'm going through these sounds and comparing them between FM8 and VOPM, and quite a few of them sound pretty significantly different on FM8... most are pretty close so far between the two. But, VOPM just has 'that' sound... still. Really wish he'd add MIDI learn, put the portamento out in the open with a standard on/off button and rate slider, etc. But, this is great... I missed this little bugger in my VSTi arsenal!
