There's a couple utilities I find indispensable: an Automation Override thingy (for when automation ghost-edits itself) and an automatable Solo button.

This is from Ableton as a free maxforlive patch, but opfour is an awesome emulation of the TX81z synth

Also, not free but worth a modest punt is Iota by Dylan Bastan. Essentially it's a bit like Iris but only using static samples but you can create moving spectral loops to get additional strangeness from your sample collection.

Oh and this creates some lovely fx but mind your speakers as the feedback gets a wee bit intense (goes for the device and the demo video)
