Very cool tracks guys. Will leave feedback on the tracks (although my comments might be naive) when the voting starts :) All the best!

This was an embarrassingly giant struggle (mainly since I'm trying to push outside my musical comfort zone... didn't get as far from it as I hoped) - I've spent easily >100 hours this month, and I'm not even sure I like what I came up with :P. But I didn't give up, so I feel good about that :D if I keep putting in effort I'm bound to get better. Just a massive relief to finally put it down...

Something like ~100 instances of ModulAir in REAPER (and about x3 that in various effects, majority stock REAPER effects and OrilRiver). ModulAir was a huge intimidating blank canvas, I ended up mostly exploring applying various filtering methods on the modulator of an FM oscillator (the resonant peaks create interesting unstable noise, allpass filters are cool in that role too). Thanks for such a great and flexible tool, Björn!

You're track is right up there with the cool ones, Exponent, especially for a first go round! Good luck and welcome to the fun!
Just a touch of EQ and a tickle of compression

Loved your track! When the voting starts, please do share how you did the guitar sound design :)

No time like the present. After reading Rellik's post above, I think we found some similar ground using a filtered sound as an fm modulator to create some distortion. I used this "technique" for anything distorted since it seemed fairly controllable. His guitar sounds more like a guitar than my obotar :D

That particular sound was just a dual osc pulse/saw (slightly detuned) ran into an 12 db lowpass with the cutoff around 1.2K and the resonance cranked. Routed that filter's output to an fm osc set to square and cranked up the fm amount to full blast then ran that osc out to a 24db lowpass and to the main outs.

Thank you! I will give it a try tonight :)

Rellik, your track is amazing and I loved it! I would be quite disappointed if you didn't win or at least finished top 5.

Felt like another attempt that was more of a learning experience than anything. Still came out of it feeling like there's a lot left to learn, but like I progressed in some important ways from last month's challenge. Like last month, I'm all ears for any feedback you have.

So here is my ugly submission. This month I was not in condition to make music for several reasons, so I will mark this as another conceptual thing.

I like to say that it was a pleasure to work with ModulAir. Though I haven't got very deep into sound design and focused on subptractive synths emulations, it's possibilities seems to be huge for a freeware VST and it can even rival commertial plugins in some ways. Especially on synthesized percussion. I think it can handle most possible drums and cymbals sounds and this month I went into creating of "drum machine on steroids". Since it is in developement stage, I want to point a few things to improve.

1. Internal envelopes producing clicks. Mostly noticeable on percussive patches where multiple amplifers used for layering. Also, there is a strange behavior in polyphonic mode, the notes are stacking somotimes for unknown reason and sometimes other notes are played with delay. And it seems to be they are not retriggerable, so you have to chop notes in piano roll.
2. MIDI implementation is not finished yet I guess. There is only master controllers that named properly. I tried to link them manually but it keeps crushing FL Studio. So I have to scroll through all the controllers manually to find where is my filter's cutoff to automate it. Not the best experience I should say.
3. Linear FM seems to be work diffirently from what I expected and I have made a nice sounding patch with it, but it would be good to have some options like audio rate modulation or exponential FM.
4. Perhaps it woud be good to have more options on oscillators. For example the ability to drop their pitch into subsonic freqs. (making them work as LFO) like on real modular oscs. And perhaps traingle waveform?
5. BBD delay behaves strange sometimes. I tried to make a chorus effect with two modules and apply it to plucked sound and it produced strange artifacts, like it sometimes leaking to the amplifer whe envelopes retriggering whe played fast arpeggio. Ofcourse it is not noticeable in the mix, but it can ruin some patches I think.

So enjoy this Synthwave/Dark electronica/Industrial you name it. Not planning to win, just for fun.

I spent so much time playing with sound design this month that eventually had to throw a tune together to get something finished!
This synth has so much capability its easy to get lost in there :)
I particularly liked playing with feeding formant oscs into fm oscs just to see what would happen.
Many thanks to Bjorn for giving us loads of fun :tu:

Just under 10 hours left btw....
