My favorite few are (not necessarily in this order) the Art Institute 4 volume set, Aura Qualic Uplifting Trance Soundset, Kujashi bank and Madame Eljay. There are so many awesome banks though. These are just the ones I find myself listening to most frequently.

Synth 1 is one of the most brilliant freeware synths ever created. Does it do every sound possible ? No. Is it lacking in some features ? Yes. But the fact that we're still talking about it 15 years later speaks volumes for it's quality. There are few if any synths from that era free or not that are still mentioned as frequently and with as much adoration.

Synth 1 has a quality and character that are still pleasing even after all these years. Don't focus on what Synth 1 can't do and just enjoy what it can do.

No, he's asking for your opinion and if you don't have one then it would be best to stay out of the thread. If you can't think of individual banks off the top of your head then don't bother posting. I gave my opinion on what I think are three banks that should be included in everybody's top dozen list. It wasn't hard because I already know what my favorite banks for Synth 1 are......

Again when someone asks for "Best" and you give them "All" then it's pointless......

On topic then... Years ago i went through all the banks in that megabundle thing and picked out these. I couldn't tell you why but i most likely tried to pick a wide range of sounds rather than a specific style.

Analog Dream
Ann Bank 1
Ann Bank 2
Ann Bank 3
Bigtone
Dark Equinox-LK
Filter303
Mr Wobble Vol 1
Mr Wobble Vol 2
Mr Wobble Zen Patches
Ouroboros 3
Phuturama-LK
Polard-LK
Rsmus7 Arps
rydsound
Synth1 AZ Bank 1
Synth1 AZ Bank 2
Synth1 AZ Bank 3
Techno Essentials
Teksonik
Uncle236 Electro
Yaka

And I would agree that it's a great synth to learn from, in part because of it's limitations but I also think the fact that it doesn't look fancy has some educational value in itself.

I totally agree with you. Synth1 is bright and beautiful spiritual instruments and flutes are created in it. The man began to tell. that the synthesizer is perfect. I replied that I had some limitations in the synthesis of complex sounds. Unlike free Fathom. Although I do not use Synth 1, but I like the Arminator. But I think Synth1 is one of the best free synthesizers.

Sorry I wasn't being helpful. These are my favorite Synth1 banks looking at the list now. Just needed a quick peek to remember. I'm old. I'm sorry.

All the Nord Lead banks 0-19
All Teksonik's banks (as much as it kills me to admit it)
All Ann Nolwenn's banks
All Damien Chamizo's banks (wicked stuff, especially the techno one)

Avoid the random generated bank. Total waste of space. The others, so-so stuff.

I hope this has been more helpful.

I rarely use Synth 1 in compositions any longer but I do still love playing it just for the joy of playing. I like to load up four or five instances, select complementary patches, and just play away. Given how limited its architecture is especially compared to the Wavetable monsters of today it is capable of an amazing range of sounds.

When I first ran Synth 1 it was on an AMD Duron 850 and it was actually very light even on that CPU. I think we tend to forget how brilliant the code behind Synth 1 is and how efficient it really is. It was the first synth at least freeware that allowed resizing and the first to allow the user to select some of the gui colors if I remember correctly. There might have been others at the time that had the same features but they have long since been lost to memory.

Some people don't like the sound of Synth 1 and that's fine, to each his own but I think almost everybody can agree it belongs in the VSTi Hall of Fame....... :)

You didn't have to say that....I know it had to hurt. But thank you. :hihi:

Yes that was very helpful. I see we agree on Nolwenn's banks being some of the best. I think they must be included in anyone's top 10 list although others will no doubt disagree as tastes do vary.

In fact I've said many times her patch "Dark Choir" gets my vote for best Synth 1 patch of all time. In certain ranges it actually sounds sampled. Brilliant. :tu:

I for one appreciate the on topic replies.

There's so much to learn when it comes to music production. Eventually I'll learn synthesis but for now I'm more of a preset kind of guy. The amount of synth1 presets out there is overwhelming and most of them don't sound that great, so it's helpful to have a good place to start.

it's a great synth, even cooler with that special librarian from neutrino sky,
on the other hand I removed it nowadays just to shorten the list of my plugins.
I only have dexed as free synth now.

Big Tone, Art Institute, Xenos, Bomfunk and Tim Conrardy...

BTW It's a shame that Ichiro Toda just dropped the face out of earth, I'm still using the same beta version since 2014 with some bugs, I love Synth1, I've created really great morphing pads on it, almost every song I've composed is 100% synth1 unless I have to do hardcore genres like Drum N Bass, I use Sytrus for that! Maybe I will release 3 banks in a near future... Totally worth it!

On this thread because I need answers too there are entirely way too many Synth1 banks for me to go thru. I'd really like to find one with Eastern/Asian sounds like Sitars, Tampuras, shruti's ect.

Maybe I should replace my current avatar with that one.

wagtunes - you should because that would be a power move. It would remind me of Dave Chappelle and Prince.
