Propellerhead announces Reason 9 Music Production Software

Reason Studios

Propellerhead Software has announced Reason 9, the latest version of the music production software. Reason 9 builds on the Reason platform by introducing a host of new devices, sounds, and creative tools that provide a fast path from inspiration to a polished song.

"Reason 9 is the newest version yet, with major new features that are sure to help everyone make more and better music," said Mattias Häggström Gerdt, Propellerhead Product Marketing Manager. "For Reason 9, we focused on the journey from inspiration to completion. The new devices and sounds can spark a million new ideas, while the new tools and highly requested features help you polish those ideas to completion. Reason 9 makes it fun and easy for everyone to capture their inspiration and develop musical ideas."

Reason 9 introduces three Player devices that instantly transform any MIDI input into compelling music:

  1. Note Echo creates rhythmic, pitched MIDI delays for melodies, drum rolls, and more.
  2. Scales & Chords turns simple melodies into beautiful harmonies and chords so you can stay focused on the music making. Transpose notes to a selected scale and automatically generate chords for your song, no music theory required.
  3. Dual Arpeggio transforms chords into intricate and inspiring rhythms. From classic up-and-down to polyphonic and polyrhythmic, Dual Arpeggio breathes new life into any instrument in your Reason rack.

Reason's new Pitch Edit mode helps you produce flawless vocals. Fix out-of-tune notes, add vibrato, change your timing, create new melodies from your recording, change the dynamics, and more. Audio to MIDI lets you convert your vocals to MIDI notes for endless sound manipulation possibilities.

Reason 9 also comes with 1000 new sounds. The Reason rack is also enhanced with key workflow improvements and darker theme options, for late-night studio sessions.

I'm interested. I am definitely going to upgrade my version 8.3. I absolutely love reason... even though it isn't necessarily the most full featured DAW on the market currently. As well, it's use of a proprietary "Rack Extension" plug-in format does savagely curtail your ability to expand on the base platform due to there being a much smaller pool of active third party developers. Also pertaining to this limitation is a need to be wary of some of the native format third party developers sometimes simply "dumping" an existing VST into RE format and then abandoning it; notably for myself are u-He and their wonderful yet in-need-of-minor-bugfix-and-may-not-get-it Uhbik series, and Izotopes limiter which altough well debugged, quite useable and worth getting, lags quite a bit behind the current equivelant vst, au and aax in terms of codebase. Notably, however, there are cross format developers who support their projects very well, and the ones of these who do best with this will fully exploit the modular nature of the RE format and/or go so far as to publish projects which are exclusive (i.e. Synapse with their "Antidote" (think Dune 1.5) and FX Suite). There are also some very small, or even one-man-show outfits which do some neat stuff, which is exclusive, that you may not find the like thereof elsewhere (DLD's quirk of a synth "Snakebite" is a really cool example). I have seen an awful lot of calling out for VST support on the net. I'm not really one who thinks that's the best idea. Propellerheads rely on their closed marketplace not only for a good revenue stream, which can only lead to a stronger, better, and assured future for their current and any future line-up. The closed marketplace and proprietary format are also, in my opinion better for a number of issues; for instance quality control and product stability (Reason is a rockbed of diamond compared to every single other DAW out there) as well as freedom to ensure flexibility in innovation where wished, and preserve compatibility as desired or not.

Although not a new feature, I must mention that ReWire is fantastic, ensuring that almost all of the functionality, either in base Reason or via RE, is available to me in most other DAWs on the market, at least to an acceptable degree, which makes me feel a bit better about my investments in plugins which are bound to a single DAW. It should be noted, also that a universal way of routing audio into and out of Reason exists in the form of "Jack Audio" server, the solution i use in place of ReWire when i want Bitwig to have fun with Reason. Yes, limitations are there with both technologies but i am grateful that they are there nonetheless.

So often i just get lost in time building up fancy schmancy "hyper-presets" via Reasons beautiful Combinator device. There is just something magical and inviting for me about the sum of this DAW's presentation, feature set and near unlimited creative potential that keeps me firing it it for productivity or for play over and over again. The new devices here surely will increase my happiness with "combinating".

This new version looks to me worth my $180 canadian dollars, and i will be happy to spend it to support my favourite way to make music. There may not be an overwhelming explosion of newer-better-faster-stronger-more on tap here but i don't need that.
