both songs are just typical sounding fare with the all too common "i wanna make this as compressed and loud as humanly possible"
unfortunately that production technique forces listeners to turn down the volume making it sound squashed and lifeless in the end.

What layzer said is a gross oversimplification of a complex process.
"Mastering" doesn't have to be some separate thing that's done to a piece of music, and certainly not something you should trust to a mystery box on the internet. If you approach the music from the outset with goal of producing a finished product, then "mastering" becomes an integral part of the production, not something that's just added on when you're done with it. Does that make sense?
