It sounds like pretty good semi ambient or soundtrack music as far as you have taken it. Maybe your mostly low volume issue has to do with the percussion becoming a some what louder toward the end. When you mix the tracks and normalize to prevent distortion, the whole track will be lowered in volume by the same percentage as the loudest part of the track.

Just a guess.
