I see that you can upgrade to this for $129 on PluginBoutique. Are the Sonivox instruments worth it? I wouldn't mind having the singles if they sound good, and TimeWarp 2600 looks interesting. Any thoughts you may have would be appreciated.

Thanks!

No. Just check this fresh thread:

This quote by Gamma-UT sums it up pretty well:

"...I can see this thread returning to Sonivox many times."

Actually, if you read into that thread a member confused Sonivox with Eisenberg (who makes Einklang). I bought the Sonivox pulse for a little of nothing a while back. I got it for the samples, but I never got into samples so I haven't done anything other than play with it a little. The samples were nice though, and to be honest I like the interface of the product too.

I think that in the past Sonivox made products that weren't well-received (check youtube for reviews on Wobble or most of their first generation offerings, but since then they've reinvented themselves. I think their earlier reputation is still following them around, and making it harder to get people to pay the increased prices of their new offerings. There are reviews for their orchestral products all saying the same thing, that they are great quality, and they can't believe the price. I will probably get the premier collection upgrade in a short while. It's sort of hard to pass up really. I've got Pulse so I should qualify for the $129 upgrade price. Here are a couple of youtube example reviews of their products- filmscore companion, 88 ensemble and big bang cinematic drums. I'm not giving the clickable link since I haven't figured out how to keep kvr from embedding the video (which seizes my browser and slows page loading almost to a standstill).

Thank you both!

Yeah, so I was interested as well, especially since I have the AIR collection. I tried a couple of their products on demo and noticed several things. 1) the samples were encrypted, so, not so useful. 2) their products were hanging up both Reaper and Live on scanning at startup. This might be because they have a dialog that pops up with every demo use, I don't know. When I unloaded the Sonivox demos, the problem went away.

I'm curious if other people have noticed similar behavior? Also, which of the products have encrypted samples and which do not? I did install the orchestral strings, they sounded ok, but, I felt that, although there was less variety, the NI Komplete strings were better. The demos of the two guitar products don't impress me much, neither does the harmonica, but, I play harp, so I would probably never use that really.

If I picked it up I doubt that I would even bother to install twist and wobble, they seem pure shite to me. Not going to lie though, I really like their silly auto-quantize thing for certain things. It makes playing hand-drumish things on 8th note triplets fun and fairly believable. I just couldn't justify paying $110 for that. I'm not sure how much I care about timewarp really, I've never really been impressed with any videos of it.

I'm interested in the real world sampled stuff at this time (with Timewarp as an exception). Pulse is one of their older products and is a sort of virtual sampler mpc device, so you would expect the included samples to be accessible IMO. The other products were locked I believe. All the big library manufacturers are restricting access to their samples now.

I've begun researching orchestration and immediately found that I wasn't arranging my strings correctly resulting in subpar strings. You probably have much more practice at it than I do so you would know better. I really like the Sonivox orchestral sounds, but that's just my personal preference. I posted because it seemed that Sonivox was getting some unwarranted bad rap when there were many positive reviews for these later products. There are quite a few if you speak German. I don't have much of a German vocabulary, but I understand enough to see that they are positive.

As far as activation and demos. I've never been happy with that. I had issues with Pulse, but they were able to straighten them out quickly. I think they may need to rethink their demo strategy though. I'm using FL Studio 11, and I've always had problems with demo and activation dialogs, so much so that I generally do a first run using savihost if there's something I need to acknowledge. It's generally only on the first run that I have problems though.

Thanks for the post, that's helpful. Full disclosure though, I absolutely do not have much experience with any sort of orchestral arrangement, just an opinion on what sounds more dynamic and believable.

To be clear, I didn't dislike them, I just felt more like the strings were in the room with me when I listened to NI's library. I didn't try out the woodwinds, I did play a bit with the brass. I think that, for me, it's just not enough to justify the c-note. If I liked timewarp a lot more or I felt that the singles were more useful, then it might make more sense. As it is I really only dig the cinematic drums and the "blue jay" kit.

On the other hand, if you do orchestral stuff, or, you just want a variety of drum kits for different singer/songwriter stuff, it's not a bad deal. I just have to be honest about how much of that stuff that I do and how many full and really cool acoustic drum kits that I have yet to use, LOL!

Sonivox, if anything, are specialists in sampling and they've licensed to a fair few software-instrument vendors. The orchestral instruments in Ableton Live Suite were produced by Sonivox.

It's their own software where things seem to go awry in my experience.

Which, in fact, is a really good point. If you have suite, the orchestral downloads are, I believe, the same or almost the same samples that are in the "premier collection." So if one wants the "sound" and uses ableton, there's probably not much additional value in this collection.

That's strange.

I can't tell you much now, but I just bought a copy in the charity auction. I will try to come back and give you my opinion after I get my copy and try it out.
This space has been unintentionally left blank.
