Hi all,
so currently I have a 1tb SSD in an enclosure where I store all the sound libraries for my vst instruments. This drive is fast filling up and so I am wondering what you guys are using? My new laptop has USB C and USB 3.1 . Will I see a big hit if I went for something like the WD 3tb passport drives? Or should I just add a second portable SSD?
Once a song is loaded, will it access the sounds again during mixing/playback or does the song load all the samples needed? (Kontakt, Omnisphere, Superior Drummer 2, BFD 3 and Falcon are the most used)

Thoughts? What are you guys using?

I checked two other retailers of this drive, and WD's own website. Nowhere (including the product manual) could I find anything stating the speed of the drive. My guess, therefore, is that it's a 5900 RPM--or even slower. (I've seen 2.5" drives that operate at 5400 RPM.)

So, while the USB 3 transfer rate might be nice, the drive's slow rotation speed will really slow you down.

And while I can't prove the drive operates at 5400 or 5900 RPM, it seems that no one--including WD--can prove it doesn't.

Interesting, thanks.

And that confirms my suspicions that the drive won't give the OP the performance he's come to expect from an SSD device.
